Aspire Care and Disability Services – Elimbah QLD
We are growing our support team and are looking forexperienced, reliable and genuinely engaging Disability Support WorkersacrossBrisbane Southside, Logan, Brisbane Northside, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.
We are not simply looking for someone who can turn up, complete a checklist and go home.
We are looking for workers who understand that good disability support is aboutthe persontheir goals, routines, personality, choices, interests, challenges, relationships and the life they want to live.
Our participants are individuals.
Some may want conversation, humour and encouragement.
Others may need quiet, consistency and time to build trust.
Some may love getting out into the community, while others may find social situations difficult.
Some participants may communicate differently, experience emotional dysregulation, live with complex disabilities or mental health challenges, or be navigating difficult circumstances in their personal lives.
You need to be able to meet people where they are without judgement.
Participants may have different personalities, lifestyles, beliefs, backgrounds and realities from your own.
We need workers who can remain respectful and professional without trying to change, judge or impose their own values on the people they support.
At the same time, being non-judgemental does not mean ignoring risk or inappropriate behaviour.
You must understand professional boundaries, duty of care, safeguarding, participant choice and control, and when something needs to be documented, reported or escalated.
What the role can actually involve
No two participants are the same, so no two shifts will necessarily look the same.
Depending on the participant, you may be supporting withpersonal care and daily living, showering and toileting, meal preparation, medication support, household tasks, mobility and transfers, community access, shopping, appointments, transport, social activities,
skill development and building independence.
You may also be responsible for accurate progress notes, incident reporting, following individual support plans, health-management plans and Positive Behaviour Support Plans.
For some participants, a successful shift might involve personal care and complex health support.
For another, it might mean getting out of the house, going to the gym, fishing, shopping, having a coffee, attending an appointment or working towards a personal goal.
For someone else, the most important part of the shift may simply be having a worker who ispresent, patient, consistent and able to build trust.
We don't want workers sitting on their phones waiting for the shift to finish.
We want people who can take appropriate initiative, engage with participants and understand why they are there.
Complex and high-intensity support
Some of our participants have complex or high-intensity support needs.
Experience and current competency in areas such asbehaviours of concern, Positive Behaviour Support, psychosocial disability, autism, intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, dementia, mental health, epilepsy/seizure management, hoisting and manual handling, PEG/enteral feeding, continence support, catheter or bowel care, diabetes management and other complex health supportswill be highly regarded.
You do not need experience in every one of these areas.
What matters is beinghonest about what you are and are not trained and competent to do.
Behaviour support requires the right person
Some participants may experience behaviours of concern,
emotional dysregulation, anxiety, frustration or difficulty communicating what they need.
We need workers who don't immediately take behaviour personally.
You should be able to remain calm, understand possible triggers, follow the participant's Behaviour Support Plan, use appropriate de-escalation strategies and recognise when additional assistance or escalation is required.
We particularly value applicants with genuine experience inPositive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed care, mental health, youth work, therapeutic support or de-escalation.
The person we're looking for
Qualifications matter, butwho you are on shift matters too.
We are interested in people who are dependable, emotionally mature and comfortable working with different personalities.
You should be able to communicate naturally with participants while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
You should be someone who:
turns up when they say they will and understands how key consistency can be to a participant;
treats participants with dignity and speakswiththem rather than down to them;
can build rapport without becoming unprofessional or crossing boundaries;
respects a participant's culture, identity, beliefs, lifestyle and personal choices;
does not gossip about participants or judge them for their circumstances;
can receive feedback and doesn't become defensive when corrected;
follows support plans and instructions instead of deciding they know better;
notices changes in a participant and communicates concerns appropriately;
completes progress notes and incident documentation properly;
understands confidentiality and privacy;
knows when to take initiative and when to seek guidance;
can work independently but communicates properly with the wider team; and
genuinely wants participants to havechoice, independence, dignity and a meaningful life.
