Ready to take your aquaculture career somewhere hands-on, outdoors and genuinely interesting? We’re looking for an Animal Health Technician to join Tassal’s Animal Health team, helping keep our fish healthy, happy and performing well across our marine farming sites.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being out on the water, working with data, getting stuck into sampling, and being part of a team that takes fish welfare seriously without taking itself too seriously.
About the role
As an Animal Health Technician, you’ll play an significant role in supporting the health, welfare and performance of our fish. You’ll work closely with the Animal Health team to carry out practical, on-farm tasks, collect accurate data, and help identify anything that could impact fish health early.
You’ll be based out of our Margate site and travel to our farm sites, working a 2/2/5/5 roster. Expect a mix of office, lab, boat and farm-based work — so if you like variety, this role has plenty of it.
Day to day, you’ll be involved in:
· Monitoring fish health, behaviour and performance
· Completing surveillance sampling and routine health checks
· Helping with early identification of disease, gill issues or unusual fish behaviour
· Supporting laboratory work, dissections and biological sample collection where required
· Recording accurate data, preparing reports and supporting projects, trials and investigations
· Following biosecurity, safety and animal welfare procedures every time
About you
You might already be working in aquaculture, marine science, fisheries, animal care, hatchery operations, fish health, environmental monitoring or a hands-on field-based role. What matters most is that you’re practical, curious, reliable and comfortable learning new technical skills.
We’re especially keen to hear from people who bring a mix of fish welfare awareness, water quality knowledge, data confidence,
common sense and a willingness to work outdoors in all conditions.
You’ll be a good fit if you have:
· A genuine interest in aquaculture, fish health, marine environments or animal welfare
· Experience with fish health monitoring, water quality testing, sampling, feeding, hatchery work, RAS systems, marine farming or similar hands-on technical work
· Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow detailed procedures consistently
· Confidence collecting, recording and working with data, including Microsoft 365 tools
· A safety-first mindset and respect for biosecurity and welfare standards
· The ability to work long days on a 2/2/5/5 roster, including 11.4-hour shifts
· A full driver’s licence
Bonus points if you have a forklift licence, Coxswain Grade 2 ticket, vessel experience, Certificate III in Aquaculture or higher, diving experience, laboratory exposure, GIS/R/Excel skills, or experience working with live fish in production or research environments.
Why join us?
· Work in a role where no two days are quite the same
· Be part of an industry-leading aquaculture business
· Learn from experienced Animal Health, farming and technical teams
· Build your skills across fish health, welfare, sampling, data and farm operations
· Access career development opportunities
· Enjoy discounted private health insurance
· Get heavily discounted seafood through our Salmon Shop and Truck
· Access free, confidential counselling through our Employee Assistance Program
