Our 12-month program provides you with a rare opportunity to embark on a successful industrial relations career.
You’ll start the program in GSLR – a central agency function within the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS). We’ll provide you with a tailored plan based your own development needs – including on-the-job training from some incredibly talented advisers, offsite training with other graduates, and work placements across the public sector.
Most importantly, we’ll continue to invest in your development once the graduate program is over!
About the role
Graduates can expect to gain exposure to labour policy and framework reform, negotiating industrial agreements, and consulting to public sector employers. You’ll engage with a range of challenging stakeholders and work with an amazing and supportive team.
As a GSLR Graduate, you will receive:
- A permanent position (subject to satisfactory performance).
- A three month placement with a public sector agency (subject to operational requirements).

- A comprehensive support network, including your manager, graduate coordinator, and an internal and external mentor.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full time or part time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or provide evidence of your ongoing right to work in Australia for the duration of your employment with the Department.
Applicants with a valid visa to work and live in Australia for a specific duration may be assessed and considered suitable for similar fixed term vacancies that arise.
Applicants must provide their certification and/or academic transcripts to verify relevance to the job requirements. Qualifications obtained outside of Australia must be provided with an assessment from the Overseas Qualifications Unit to ensure they meet Australian Standards (this is a free service).
To work for LGIRS, you must consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a clearance before you start. If deemed suitable, LGIRS will coordinate and pay for your NCCHC as part of your pre-employment checks.

Role Specific Requirements
The following outlines what experience and qualifications are required to undertake this role:
Ability to find information and undertake research, analyse and make evidence-based recommendations. Ability to clearly explain information using language appropriate to the audience. An undergraduate or postgraduate degree relevant to labour relations completed within the past 24 months, or that will be completed by the end of the current calendar year. This typically includes, but is not limited to, industrial relations, human resource management, psychology or law. However, don't let this deter you - if you feel as though your qualifications are relevant to our field of work, we want to hear from you!
