The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Criminal Defence Lawyer (ideally with 2+ years PAE) to join our team. This is an exciting full-time opportunity, working five days per week in our modern office located in the Perth CBD.
We also encourage enthusiastic lawyers with under 2 years PAE who have a strong passion for criminal law to apply.
This role offers substantial hands‑on involvement across a broad range of criminal and restraining order matters. It is ideal for a practitioner who enjoys autonomy and is committed to delivering strong client outcomes. We strongly encourage our staff to have good work/life balance.
Key Responsibilities
Caseload Management - Managing a diverse criminal law caseload across summary and indictable matters with autonomy.
Advocacy - Appearing regularly in the Magistrates Court and District Court for bail applications, sentencing hearings,
final order hearings and summary trials.
Strategy & Drafting - Drafting high‑quality legal submissions, case strategies and correspondence.
Client Care - Providing transparent, practical and empathetic legal advice to clients from varied backgrounds.
Collaboration - Working closely with counsel on complex matters and negotiating effectively with prosecution.
Mentorship - Contributing to the development of paralegals, offering guidance and fostering professional growth within the team.
About You
Experience - Admission as a legal practitioner in Western Australia with preferably two years post-admission experience in criminal law and have a current practicing certificate.
Advocacy Skills - Developed courtroom advocacy and communication skills.
Professionalism - A commitment to ethical practice, empathy and a client-centred approach.
Organisation - Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage a file load independently.
Desirable
Prior experience in criminal defence, prosecuting, Legal Aid, ALS or as an Usher/Associate to a District Court Judge.
