HEAD OF YEAR

Position Details

Mater Dei College is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable teacher to join us on a full-time, ongoing basis as Head of Year, to provide strategic leadership in the planning, development and implementation of student wellbeing, pastoral car and year-level initiatives, fostering a positive, inclusive and supportive environment that enables every student to thrive academically, socially and spiritually. This is an exciting leadership chance for a passionate educator who is committed to fostering student engagement, resilience, and personal excellence through a holistic approach to wellbeing and learning. The Head of Year is a key member of the College Leadership Team, contributing to the strategic direction of student wellbeing, pastoral care and the holistic development of students.

The Head of Year will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:

•Leading the pastoral care and wellbeing program for the designated year group, in line with College policies and the CEWA Child Safe Framework.

•Monitoring student attendance, behaviour, and academic progress, implementing strategies for students at risk, and liaising with staff and parents as required.

•Coordinating year-level activities such as assemblies, retreats, camps, Encounter Days, and information evenings.

•Building strong relationships with students, staff, and parents to ensure a cohesive, supportive, and inclusive year group culture.

•Supporting and mentoring Homeroom teachers and other staff in delivering effective pastoral care.

•Acting as a point of contact for student referrals to College Wellbeing Services and following up on pastoral and behavioural issues.

•Actively contributing to College-wide planning and strategic direction as a member of the Leadership Team.





Selection Criteria The successful applicant will demonstrate a high level of professionalism and leadership whilst supporting the Catholic ethos and values of the College.

You will:

•Have the ability to teach across Years 7–12.

•Demonstrate strong knowledge and experience in pastoral care, student wellbeing, and adolescent development.

•Be committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment where every student is supported to thrive.

•Possess excellent leadership, organisational, and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to mentor colleagues and work collaboratively.

•Show strong communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and staff.

•Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and the implementation of evidence-based wellbeing practices.

•Be actively engaged in and supportive of the co-curricular life of the College.

Qualifications Required

•Bachelor’s degree in Education

•Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) or equivalent

Terms of Employment

•Hold, or be working towards completion of, Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School, Accreditation to Teach Religious Education or Accreditation for Leadership in Catholic Schools.

•Annually complete Child Protection Procedures and Mandatory Reporting Training.

Highly Desirable

•Demonstrated leadership experience in pastoral care, student well-being or year-level coordination.

•An understanding of current educational perspectives.

•Strong knowledge of adolescent development and pastoral care practices.

•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

•Strong time management and organisational skills.

•Strong problem solving and critical thinking abilities.
