JOB DESCRIPTION
1st To 3rd Year Fitter Machinist Apprenticeship
Migas Apprentices & Trainees - Mount Saint Thomas, NSW
Job Description
You will be mentored by qualified tradespeople while completing a combination of on-the-job training and formal study, developing practical skills in fitting, machining, fabrication, maintenance and precision engineering.
Your duties will include, but are not limited to:
Assist qualified Fitters Machinists with the maintenance, repair and manufacture of mechanical components, equipment and infrastructure across the Queensland Brain Institute and broader UQ facilities
Manufacturing and modifying tools and equipment to support operational requirements
Assist with installation, assembly, testing and commissioning of mechanical equipment and systems
Learn fault-finding and troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and rectify mechanical issues under supervision
Learn and apply safe work practices and comply with all WHS requirements and University procedures
Support preventative maintenance programs and assist with documentation including maintenance records, inspection reports and job sheets

About the Candidate
The successful candidate will have a practical, hands-on approach and a genuine interest in engineering,



manufacturing and mechanical systems.
You will ideally have strong communication skills, a positive attitude, a robust work ethic, and a willingness to learn while working safely in workshop and research facility environments.
The role involves working with machinery, hand and power tools, mechanical equipment, lifting and manual handling tasks, workshop environments, and occasionally working across multiple campus locations. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided where required.
In addition to these qualities, you will ideally:
Have a current driver's licence
Strong problem-solving skills
Cutting-edge and creative approach to tasks
Have basic mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in fitting and machining
Be able to use basic hand tools and measuring equipment safely
Have an interest in engineering, fabrication, manufacturing or maintenance work
Have a practical attitude and willingness to learn through structured on-the-job training
Demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to work accurately with precision equipmentHave the abilityto pass a Medical, Drug and Alcohol Screen, and Police Check
