As an Associate or Senior Associate in Molly Gibson's Pioneering Business Unit at Flagship Pioneering, you will play a crucial role in the development of groundbreaking business concepts.
Your responsibilities will include validating key scientific or technological uncertainties and transforming validated ideas into a viable company focused on scientific innovation.
You will be engaged in all facets of company formation, from identifying and recruiting essential collaborators and advisors to laying down the groundwork for intellectual property, assembling the initial scientific team, and cultivating a positive team setting.

What you'll do
Spearhead and actively participate in exploratory initiatives that evaluate promising scientific domains and formulate actionable venture hypotheses.
Identify pivotal scientific questions that underpin venture hypotheses and devise experimental frameworks to swiftly validate these concepts.
Establish and nurture relationships with leading experts and academic authorities to secure early support and validate critical venture ideas.
Conduct thorough analyses of the intellectual property landscape, devise initial strategies, and draft foundational applications for the technology and the new company.
Develop corporate strategies and operational plans, setting clear objectives, timelines, and resource allocations to ensure rapid growth.




Create customized presentations for diverse audiences to effectively communicate the company's vision and objectives.
Support business development initiatives and continuously refine the company's narrative to align with evolving market needs.
Oversee and coordinate initial scientific and intellectual property teams, managing relationships with key opinion leaders and early hires.
Supervise scientific teams and daily research operations, including logistical tasks such as establishing lab facilities and managing HR and real estate requirements.
Act as a subject matter expert, transferring knowledge to the active company team while remaining current on literature and advancements in the field.
Collaborate with Flagship's operational teams, including Finance, IP, IT, HR, and Talent, to ensure optimal operational effectiveness.
Requirements
A PhD or MD in a STEM discipline from a recognized institution, with at least 2 years of experience in life sciences, biotechnology, or entrepreneurial settings.
A solid passion for innovative scientific endeavors coupled with operational expertise.
Proven ability to quickly assimilate new scientific concepts and engage deeply with thought leaders in the field.
Excellent communication skills,



with the ability to articulate a clear value proposition for scientific opportunities to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Basic understanding of various drug discovery therapeutic modalities, including small molecules, biologics, and gene therapies.
Experience in project management and team leadership within a scientific or entrepreneurial context.
Nice to have
Previous experience in a startup environment or venture capital.
Familiarity with regulatory processes related to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
Experience in business development or strategic planning within the life sciences sector.
A network of contacts within the scientific and academic communities.
Knowledge of funding mechanisms and grant writing in the life sciences field.
Skills & tools
Strong analytical skills to assess scientific data and market trends.
Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.
Familiarity with laboratory management and operational processes.
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.
Competence in using presentation software and data visualization tools.
