Sydney Dramaturgical is a bilingual, three-city publication about live performance. We commission and pay writers across Sydney, Recent York, and Montréal.

We're taking applications from reviewers to cover current productions in NSW. Reviews are timely dispatches — first draft within 14 days of the writer seeing the show — and are commissioned only to writers on our roster. If you're not yet on the roster, this is the application to get you there.

What we're looking for

- Reviewers with a distinct critical voice who can turn around timely, well‑shaped reviews
- Openness to a range of forms: theatre, dance, live art, opera, adjacent forms
- Writers who read performance closely and can articulate what a show is doing structurally, not just whether it worked

Who this is for

- You must be physically based in Sydney or elsewhere in NSW. Reviews require you to attend productions in person; this is not a remote‑from‑anywhere role
- A first‑draft turnaround of 14 days from seeing the show is realistic for you
- Bilingualism is a plus but not required

Rate

$50 AUD per review (tax‑inclusive). Paid on receipt of first draft. Wise or direct bank transfer. You source and credit photos. No kill fees.

Reviewers must be approved onto our roster before pieces are commissioned. Each review is also approved individually by the editor before the show is attended.

Role Description

Sydney Dramaturgical commissions freelance reviews of current productions in New South Wales from writers physically based in Sydney or elsewhere in NSW.

- Reviewers must be approved onto the publication's roster before individual pieces are commissioned.
- Reviews are paid $100 AUD tax‑inclusive on receipt of first draft, payable via Wise or direct bank transfer.
- Writers are encouraged to source and credit their own photos, either their own or from the production.
- First draft is due within 14 days of the writer attending the production.
- All contributions are subject to a six‑month exclusivity period from date of publication.

Qualifications

- Physical presence in Sydney or elsewhere in NSW (non‑negotiable).
- Demonstrated ability to write critically about live performance.
- A writing sample (published or unpublished).
- Reliability with turnaround deadlines and editorial process.
