Head of Health, Safety & Environment
Our client is a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer seeking an ambitious, commercially minded, and hands-on Head of Health, Safety & Environment to lead the site's HSE strategy and drive a high-performance safety culture.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a Senior HSE Advisor, HSE Manager, or Deputy HSE Leader from a large, highly regulated manufacturing environment looking to take the next step in their career.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer / Managing Director, you will play a critical leadership role in shaping the organisation's safety culture, regulatory compliance, and environmental performance while partnering with leaders across all areas of the business.
About the Role
As the Head of Health, Safety & Environment, you will lead the development and execution of the company's HSE strategy while maintaining a highly visible presence across the manufacturing operation.
This role requires someone who is equally comfortable presenting strategic initiatives to the Executive Leadership Team as they are conducting toolbox talks, walking the factory floor, coaching frontline leaders, and managing WorkCover matters.
You will be responsible for embedding a proactive safety culture that focuses on coaching, engagement, and continuous improvement—not simply enforcing compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the site's Health, Safety & Environmental strategy aligned with business objectives.
- Champion a positive, proactive safety culture across all levels of the organisation.
- Provide strategic HSE advice to the CEO and Senior Management Team.
- Lead workplace safety, environmental compliance, and risk management programs.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety performance and operational excellence.
- Lead site audits, inspections, investigations, and corrective action programs.
- Oversee incident investigations, root cause analysis, and preventative actions.
- Manage the site's WorkCover and injury management processes, including return-to-work programs.
- Deliver engaging toolbox talks, leadership coaching, and HSE training.
- Partner closely with Operations, Engineering, HR, Quality, and Production teams to embed safe work practices.
- Ensure compliance with all WHS legislation, environmental regulations, and pharmaceutical industry standards.
- Monitor HSE KPIs and prepare executive-level reports for the Board and senior leadership.
- Build strong relationships with regulatory bodies, auditors, insurers, and external stakeholders.
About You
We're looking for someone who combines executive capability with genuine operational engagement.
You will ideally possess:
- Tertiary qualifications in Workplace Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, FMCG, or tier-one manufacturing environments.
- Exposure to GMP, TGA, or similarly regulated manufacturing environments.
- Proven experience in a senior HSE leadership role or as the second-in-command within a larger organisation.
- Robust knowledge of Australian WHS legislation, environmental compliance, and risk management.
- Experience managing WorkCover, injury management,
and return-to-work programs.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to influence executives and frontline employees alike.
- A collaborative leadership style that builds trust through coaching and engagement.
- Strategic thinking combined with a practical, hands-on approach.
- Strong stakeholder management and change leadership capability.
The Ideal Candidate
This role is suited to an ambitious HSE professional ready to take the next significant step in their career.
You are someone who:
- Has the executive presence to present confidently to CEOs and senior leadership teams.
- Enjoys being visible on the factory floor and actively engaging with employees.
- Leads through influence, coaching, and collaboration rather than enforcement.
- Is commercially aware and understands how safety contributes to business performance.
- Thrives in highly regulated manufacturing environments where compliance and continuous improvement are critical.
- Wants to build a long-term leadership career within a growing organisation.
What's on Offer
- $160,000–$170,000 + Super
- Executive leadership opportunity reporting directly to the CEO
- Opportunity to shape and lead the HSE function across a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer
- Collaborative executive leadership team
- High-impact role with genuine autonomy
- Stable, growing organisation committed to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
Why Apply?
An opportunity to influence culture, develop leaders, and make a lasting impact across a highly respected pharmaceutical manufacturing business. If you're ready to transition from being an exceptional operational HSE leader into a true executive role, we'd love to hear from you.
