Research Project Officer – Psychology

Location: Sydney, NSW · Full time · Fixed Term – Approx. 2 years (to 31 August 2028). Salary: Level 6 – $103k–$110k plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.

About the Role

This role works with the research team and key stakeholders on projects investigating the mental health of people from refugee backgrounds, supporting the academic activities of the Refugee Trauma and Recovery Program. The role includes coordination of two specific projects: a longitudinal study investigating psychological and social mechanisms underlying refugee mental health, and a study on a scalable skills‑based intervention to improve wellbeing and functioning among people with refugee backgrounds.

Specific Responsibilities

- Develop and maintain well‑organised systems of scheduling, communication, file organisation and documentation of meetings and study procedures; train project staff in their use.
- Coordinate multi‑site research studies, including recruitment, screening, scheduling, tracking and follow‑up of participants and resolving participation issues.
- Coordinate project meetings and oversee smooth running of research projects, ensuring adherence to protocols and that milestones are met.
- Execute research tasks such as literature reviews, data collection, entry, management, analysis, resolving data quality issues and contributing to manuscript drafting.
- Oversee translation and back‑translation of measures into study languages.
- Engage with partner organisations and stakeholders, including academic partners, NGOs and refugee‑led organisations.
- Deliver or support training in Problem Management‑Plus to facilitators from refugee backgrounds.
- Administer survey measures and assessments to study participants.
- Implement experimental research sessions with participants.
- Manage data, including data cleaning and integrity in research databases.
- Assist with research duties related to the Refugee Trauma and Recovery Program as required.
- Oversee finance administration requests,



including vendor set‑up and invoice payments.
- Cooperate with health and safety policies and procedures of the university and ensure actions do not compromise psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the Successful Applicant

Selection Criteria

- A postgraduate qualification or equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Excellent organisational skills, ability to undertake diverse tasks, work independently and accurately with attention to detail.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills; effective communication with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience providing administrative and research support with efficiency, flexibility and accuracy.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
- Non‑essential, but preferred:
- Experience in longitudinal research studies and/or randomised controlled trials.
- Experience providing training in cognitive behavioural or similar therapeutic modalities.
- Experience recruiting and/or retaining participants in research studies.
- Experience working with people from refugee or culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to relevant training.
