Your Role

Are you interested in making a difference while using your trade skills? The Army Reserve offers a variety of trade roles where you can experience adventure outside your everyday life.

As a soldier in the Army Reserve, you’ll perform military duties and apply your trade skills in a range of environments. You’ll work on Army bases and in the field on exercises and deployments across Australia and overseas.

- Carpenter – Build, maintain and repair a range of Army facilities and support local communities
- Electrical Technician – Keep the Army’s electrical, refrigeration and air‑conditioning equipment in peak working order
- Electrician – Power the Army’s buildings and battle‑management systems
- Metalsmith – Keep Army vehicles and equipment mission‑ready
- Plumber – Bring your plumbing skills to the Army Reserve

On completion of your initial military and employment training you could earn at least $236/day tax‑free. Additional amounts are paid for time spent on exercises and deployments.

Requirements

To apply for this role you must:

- Be at least 17, an Australian citizen, and have completed Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English and Mathematics
- If you are not an Australian citizen you may still be eligible – please visit ADF Careers Eligibility Page for details
- Be reasonably fit and healthy; you’ll need to pass a physical fitness test before you join
- Be able to obtain a security clearance

Specific trade requirements

- Carpenter: Qualified Carpenter with Certificate III in Carpentry and demonstrated current work experience
- Electrical Technician: Qualified Electrical Technician with approved apprenticeship or traineeship and full‑time employment requirement
- Electrician: Qualified Electrician with approved apprenticeship or traineeship and full‑time employment requirement
- Metalsmith: Qualified Welder 1st Class, Boilermaker Marker Off, Boilermaker Welder or Sheet Metal Worker with approved apprenticeship or traineeship and full‑time employment requirement
- Plumber: Qualified Plumber with approved apprenticeship or traineeship and full‑time employment requirement
