The Opportunity
The Monash Japanese Language Education Hub (MJLEH) was established in **** with a grant from the Nippon Foundation.
Housed in the Japanese Studies Centre and affiliated with the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics (Faculty of Arts), the Hub provides a variety of activities and programs dedicated to improving and supporting the teaching and learning of Japanese in Australia.
The MJLEH Scholarships support graduate researchers to complete a PhD at Monash University on a topic related to the acquisition and/or teaching of Japanese Language and Cultural Literacy.
Awardees will also become Fellows of the Nippon Foundation.
One award is made available each year, up to a total of two awards to be held concurrently.
Research Areas
Second language learners and language acquisition
Teaching of Japanese language and/or cultural competency
Projects incorporating a multilingual or multinational perspective on Japanese language teaching/learning
Projects that fulfil these requirements and link to existing research strengths within the Faculty of Arts are especially welcomed.
Candidate Requirements
The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in a relevant field (e.g., Languages, Linguistics, Education, or relevant Social Science discipline).
In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honours or Master's degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus.
Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.
The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by December ****.
However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.
