About the role

Rathbone Marine is seeking a skilled Diesel Fitter, Fitter Machinist, or Apprentice Diesel Fitter to join our dynamic team in Cairns, QLD. This is a full time position based at our Cairns facility (QLD 4870), offering an excellent opportunity to develop or advance your expertise in diesel engine maintenance, repair, and machining within the marine industry. Whether you are an experienced fitter looking to progress your career or an apprentice eager to learn a valuable trade, this role provides a platform to contribute to the continued success of our marine operations whilst working with industry-leading equipment and experienced professionals.

Key responsibilities

- Performing routine and preventative maintenance on diesel engines and associated marine equipment
- Diagnosing mechanical faults and carrying out repairs to restore equipment to full operational standard
- Machining components and parts as required, utilising precision equipment and following technical specifications
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and service manuals to ensure accurate work completion
- Assembling, disassembling, and reassembling engine components with precision and attention to detail
- Testing equipment and engines following repairs to verify correct operation and safety compliance
- Maintaining accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and parts used on each job
- Adhering to all health and safety regulations and workplace procedures
- Collaborating with other team members and supervisors to ensure projects are completed efficiently and to specification
- For apprentices: undertaking structured training and development under the mentorship of experienced tradespeople

What we're looking for





- For experienced Diesel Fitters/Fitter Machinists: A recognised trade qualification in diesel fitting, mechanical fitting, or machining, or equivalent experience in a similar role
- For Apprentice Diesel Fitters: A genuine desire to learn the trade, completion of secondary education, and eligibility to commence an apprenticeship programme
- Strong mechanical knowledge and understanding of diesel engine systems and marine equipment
- Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments
- Experience with machining equipment and techniques (desirable for experienced candidates)
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, drawings, and specifications accurately
- A methodical and detail-oriented approach to work, with a commitment to quality and precision
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose mechanical faults systematically
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment
- A commitment to health and safety in the workplace and a willingness to follow all procedures
- Current Driver's Licence
- Previous marine industry experience is highly desirable but not essential
