Job Description
This is a hands‑on, highly varied role where no two days are the same. You will be out in the community supporting practical local law compliance, biosecurity, animal management, pest and weed control, environmental matters and stock route management. With real visibility and purpose, the role offers the opportunity to work closely with residents, landholders, Traditional Owners, government agencies and community groups to achieve positive outcomes across the Shire.
Balancing field‑based work, community engagement and regulatory responsibility, this position will suit someone who enjoys variety, takes pride in problem solving and can build trusted relationships while maintaining fair and consistent compliance standards. From responding to public enquiries and preparing notices and reports, to supporting travelling stock movements and operating plant and equipment safely, you will play an important part in keeping Boulia Shire well managed, connected and thriving.

About the Candidate
Boulia Shire Council is seeking a practical, approachable and community‑minded Rural Lands Protection Officer who enjoys working with people, building positive relationships and helping protect the safety, amenity and sustainability of Boulia Shire. You will bring sound judgement, strong communication skills and a practical approach to compliance, community engagement and field‑based work. You will be confident working with members of the public, landholders and agencies, and able to balance education, support and enforcement responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Ability to read, interpret, explain and apply Local Laws and relevant legislation.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and record keeping.
- Sound understanding of pest, weed, stock route and animal management strategies.
- Ability to identify pest plants and pest animals and apply appropriate control measures.
- Knowledge of enforcement procedures, policies and regulatory requirements.
- Good computer skills, including experience using Microsoft software packages.
- Current C class driver licence.
- Relevant certifications or the ability to obtain them, such as 1080 certification, Animal Control certification, Senior First Aid, chemical management/ACDC licence, firearms licence, LGAQ Authorised Persons certification and Blue Card.
- Previous enforcement, regulatory, animal management or rural land management experience will be highly regarded.
