As a Senior Claims Specialist, you will proactively manage a book of specialty claims throughout the full claim life cycle. Your portfolio will include technically complex, high‑value matters, with exposure to construction PI and broader financial lines risks.
You will work closely with underwriters, brokers, clients, external advisors, and internal stakeholders to drive strong claims outcomes, support account retention, and contribute to the company’s market‑facing presence.
- Interpret policy coverage and determine if coverage applies to claims submitted.
- Manage and adjust all incoming insurance claims for the relevant business line, delegating administrative and processing tasks to the offshore shared services team when appropriate.
- Establish and set reserves for indemnity and defence costs, reviewing reserves on a regular basis to ensure adequacy.
- Authorise payments in accordance with internal processes and within scope of authority, settling claims as expeditiously and economically as possible.
- Ensure that internal and external stakeholders and clients consistently receive a high level of claims service that differentiates the company from its competitors.
- Provide instructions to external service providers with respect to coverage, investigation and ultimate settlement of claims.
- Identify opportunities and liaise with the Recovery team to pursue all avenues of recovery; prepare files for suit, trial or subrogation where necessary.
- Participate directly in mediation / arbitration meetings and actively participate in settlement discussions.
- Provide information to management on the existence or development of critical losses and advise on relevant trends within the portfolio.
- Work closely with other business lines to raise the company profile and assist in account retention and new business opportunities.
- Manage the overall quality and performance of external service providers.
- Consistently implement, maintain and monitor departmental standards and procedures.
- Work closely with underwriting and risk engineering departments to promote an integrated business unit approach and ensure seamless delivery of underwriting and claims management services.
- In conjunction with underwriting, review policy terms and conditions including assisting with the production of manuscript policy wordings and endorsements.
- Participate in claims audits when required.
- Identify suspicious or potentially fraudulent claims, arrange investigation and brief senior managers if further action is recommended.
Qualifications and Soft Skills
- Significant previous claims management experience in Financial Lines or the Legal industry.
- Tertiary qualifications in law or a related discipline.
- Sound knowledge of the Insurance Contracts Act and demonstrated ability to understand and apply legal principles to claims management.
- Claims management experience in Construction PI.
- Ability to manage technical, high‑value, and often sensitive claims.
- Client‑facing and broker‑facing experience.
- Strong legal and policy interpretation skills.
- A commercial mindset and good judgment.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
