Ardex Technology is hiring a Head of Engineering who will report directly to the CEO, with a real say in the biggest calls the business makes.

For 25+ years, Ardex has built the software that runs the thoroughbred industry — breeding, agistment, invoicing and more — with customers across Australia, NZ, UK, Ireland, the US, Qatar, South Africa and Asia. Owned by William Inglis & Son and run independently, Ardex is small enough that decisions get made fast.

What you’ll be doing in this role

Ardex runs a mature, Azure-hosted legacy platform that hundreds of customers depend on every day, alongside EPONA, its next‑generation replacement being built on AWS. You'll own both: steadily modernising the legacy platform without disrupting the customers who rely on it, while driving EPONA and its new SaaS and mobile products forward at pace.

This is not a hands‑off architecture role. You'll set strategy and make the architectural calls, but you'll also be writing specs, reviewing PRs, pairing on hard problems, and shipping code yourself when it counts. You'll run a team of 10-15 engineers, some remote — leading from inside the codebase, not above it.

You'll also take ownership of the things that keep a growing platform healthy: security and reliability, production support when things go wrong, and the delivery standards and documentation that let the team move fast without losing track of things. And you'll work closely with product and commercial teams to turn business goals into a technical roadmap the team can actually deliver.

What we are looking for

- Proven engineering leadership — you've led and grew a team,



and you're accountable for both people and technical outcomes
- End‑to‑end modernisation and architecture judgement — you've led a significant platform modernisation or cloud migration from start to finish, and you can make sound architectural calls across two live platforms, holding a clear line on how one evolves into the other
- Hands‑on polyglot engineering — deep in at least one core language, fluent enough to pick up, review and ship in the rest. You work at both altitudes: shaping solutions and writing the specs engineers and AI agents build from, and staying in the code — reviewing PRs, pairing on hard problems, shipping when it counts
- Credible across the stack — Ardex's platforms span an Azure‑hosted legacy platform (C#, VB.Net, MSSQL) with a companion desktop app, and a modern AWS platform (C#, Go, Vue, React Native, PostgreSQL) . You don't need depth in every technology, but you need to be credible reviewing and writing code across them
- Practical experience with AI tooling — applying it to accelerate engineering work and build smarter products
- A transparent communicator — equally comfortable explaining trade‑offs to a CEO, a commercial team, or an engineer
