Heads up! This role is based in‑person at our office in sunny Brisbane, Australia.
About Askable
Askable is a user research platform trusted by many leading companies. Founded in 2017, it operates from Brisbane, London, and Chicago to help teams run better research faster, from participant recruitment to insights.
About the role
We’re hiring an in‑house lawyer to build and lead the legal function across international jurisdictions. This is a build‑from‑zero role: no legal team, no playbook. You will own day‑to‑day legal execution across commercial, privacy, and corporate matters, partnering closely with Sales, Product, Security, and Leadership, and reporting directly to the COO.
This hands‑on role requires a pragmatic, business‑oriented lawyer comfortable building from scratch, enabling revenue and managing risk without slowing the company down.
What you’ll do
- Commercial and revenue enablement: own and negotiate enterprise SaaS agreements (MSAs, DPAs, SLAs, SOWs), partner with Sales to unblock deals and improve deal velocity, create and maintain contract templates, and advise on procurement, vendor, and partnership agreements.
- Data privacy and security: lead legal aspects of data protection and privacy across operating markets (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA), support customer security reviews and questionnaires, partner with Security and Engineering on SOC 2 and ISO processes, and draft and maintain DPAs, privacy policies, and internal guidance. Provide exposure to multi‑jurisdiction data and cross‑border transfer issues across Australia, UK, US, and the Philippines.
- Corporate and operational legal: support board governance, corporate housekeeping,
and cap table matters; manage employment‑related legal issues with HR; identify legal risks early and propose pragmatic solutions; build lightweight legal processes that scale with the business.
- Legal operations and external counsel: act as the primary interface with external counsel, decide when to handle matters in‑house versus outsource, and control legal spend over time.
Skills and experience you’ll bring
The most significant thing: proven experience as in‑house counsel at a scaling SaaS or tech company. Experience at a commercial law firm is an asset, but preference is given to those who have operated inside a business from inside.
Other qualifications include a strong background in enterprise SaaS commercial contracting, experience working inside fast‑growing companies or scale‑ups, comfort operating as a sole legal contributor with real ambiguity, and the judgment to balance risk against business velocity.
Bonus points for experience in regulated or data‑heavy industries and exposure to international expansion.
The mindset you’ll need
You will be responsible for building the function while performing the core legal tasks: setting up templates, playbooks, and processes on the fly rather than inheriting them. You need to have energy, genuine curiosity about how the business works, and the judgment to make calls without precedent. Emotional maturity to give and receive direct feedback, enjoyment of stretch goals, and a willingness to learn our product and offerings quickly are essential.
Perks and benefits
Competitive salary, vibrant social work environment, Askable Days (an extra paid day off each month, for a total of 7 weeks annual leave), daily buffet lunch, free public transport to and from the office, and more.
Before you go…
We’re committed to building diverse teams. If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly, we’d still love to hear from you.
