The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia.
The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia's economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The WHS Officer is accountable and responsible to deliver the following duties:
Undertake research and analysis activities to identify and address WHSE risks to capability.
Develop and implement work health and safety programs.
Provide advice on the application of work health and safety and environmental legislation and Defence policies and procedures.
Contribute to implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
Engage with internal and external stakeholders on complex and sensitive work health and safety issues.
Work collaboratively with stakeholders and subject matter experts to resolve work health and safety issues.
Evaluate activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety and environmental legislation, policies and procedures.
Resolve problems using qualified expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action and implications for work health and safety activities.
About our Team
The SRF-W Work Health, Safety and Environmental (WHSE) Officer is accountable and responsible to the EL 1 WHSE Manager.




The position assists the WHSE Manager with WHSE compliance in an integrated workforce.This role performs and achieves complex to very complex work health and safety functions by ongoing monitoring, auditing and facilitating rectification of WHSE issues.
The role undertakes safety governance and assurance activities (both desktop and infield) associated with the delivery of maintenance support to nuclear powered submarines.
This role engages with a wide variety of stakeholders and will provide advice regarding relevant WHS and Environmental legislation, Defence policy, industry good practice and the status of maintenance safety as implemented by the Sovereign Sustainment Partner (ASC).
This role is a key enabler of safe and compliant delivery of maintenance support, by ensuring that all maintenance conducted by SRF-W, ASC and other Commonwealth Agencies complies with relevant WHS and Environmental legislation.
