The Position

Join the Australian National University's Safety & Wellbeing team as the Senior WHS Specialist - Hazardous Substances & Chemical Safety.

This newly created specialist position provides University-wide leadership in hazardous substances, dangerous goods and chemical safety across research, teaching and operational environments.

Working with Colleges, Schools and Portfolios, you will provide authoritative technical advice, lead the development of chemical safety frameworks, policies and systems, undertake assurance and compliance activities, support complex incident investigations, and strengthen organisational capability through education and continuous improvement.

This is an prospect to influence safety outcomes across one of Australia's leading research-intensive universities while partnering with researchers, technical specialists and senior leaders to support safe, innovative teaching and research.

The Person

You are an experienced WHS or chemical safety professional with significant expertise in hazardous substances management within a complex organisation.

You possess excellent technical knowledge of hazardous substances legislation, risk management and compliance, together with demonstrated experience developing policies, systems and practical solutions that improve organisational safety performance.

You are a collaborative and trusted adviser who can influence stakeholders at all levels, analyse complex issues, manage competing priorities and communicate technical information clearly to a broad range of audiences.

Experience within a university, research,



healthcare or similarly complex environment will be highly regarded.

The Work Health and Safety Operations team partners with Colleges and Portfolios across ANU to provide strategic and operational WHS advice, specialist expertise, assurance, incident management, governance and capability development. The team is committed to enabling world-class teaching and research through practical, contemporary and risk-based safety leadership.

The People & Culture Division provides strategic leadership and professional services that enable ANU people to thrive. Safety & Wellbeing is responsible for leading the University's work health and safety framework, supporting a proactive safety culture and partnering with the University community to achieve excellence in health, safety and wellbeing.
