Cobar is a rural mining community located in western New South Wales, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city living. Council owns and operates the Cobar Shire & TAFE Library, Great Cobar Heritage Centre, Lilliane Brady Village (aged care facility), Children's Services, Youth & Community Centre, and works depots in Euabalong and Cobar.
About The Role
The Compliance Officer is responsible for delivering high‑quality compliance, enforcement and customer service functions that support the safety and liveability of Cobar Shire. The role involves investigating complaints, conducting patrols, animal handling and applying relevant legislation across companion animals, littering and water pollution, abandoned vehicles, public safety hazards, parks and reserves, building sites, and obstructions within public spaces. This is a hands‑on regulatory role with a high level of autonomy, involving proactive community engagement and formal enforcement action where necessary. The position is classified as Band 2 Level 3 (up to $98,000) plus superannuation and relocation, governed by the Local Government (State) Award. The role operates on a 9‑day fortnight (38 hours per week) and includes overtime and on‑call opportunities where required.
Responsibilities
- Investigate complaints and conduct patrols within public spaces.
- Perform animal handling and enforce compliance with relevant legislation.
- Manage issues related to littering, water pollution, abandoned vehicles, public safety hazards, parks,
reserves, building sites, and obstructions.
- Engage with the community proactively and initiate formal enforcement actions when necessary.
- Maintain accurate records and produce enforcement reports.
About You
You have experience in animal handling and regulatory compliance, can work independently, and exercise sound judgement in complex situations. You are a practical, solutions‑focused compliance professional confident in field work and engaging with diverse stakeholders. You possess strong communication skills, can negotiate positive outcomes in challenging contexts, and apply legislation fairly and consistently. You thrive in a varied role where no two days are the same, and take pride in contributing to a safe and well‑managed community.
