Role

This is a hands‑on role working alongside BSS staff and students within a busy commercial kitchen environment. The Trainer & Assessor will deliver high‑quality training and assessment for the following qualifications:

- Certificate II in Baking (SBAT)
- Certificate II in Cookery
- Certificate I in Hospitality

Selection Criteria

- Capacity to undertake compliance requirements in regards to Registered Training Organisations connected to VET and SBAT¿s.
- Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively with members of the school community including students and the capacity to provide learning support to students through various Vocational programs ran through a hospitality sector.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of and also training students in Hospitality Equipment including Commercial cooking equipment as relevant to the position.
- Capacity to work cooperatively with a range of people including teachers, education support, students and parents.
- Demonstrated capacity in providing learning opportunities for students to prepare for post school life.

Responsibilities

Training & Assessment

- Deliver, supervise, and assess students enrolled in the VET courses listed above.
- Ensure all training and assessment practices meet RTO requirements and maintain accurate, up‑to‑date records.
- Provide practical supervision and instruction to students working in the commercial kitchen.

Kitchen Operations & Safety

- Demonstrate proficiency in the day‑to‑day operations of a busy commercial kitchen and confidently instruct others.
- Ensure all kitchen staff and students comply with WH&S; legislation at all times.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of City of Ballarat Food Safety regulations and ensure full compliance.
- Assist in the preparation of food products for sale.
- Participate in stock control and maintain kitchen equipment as required.

Team Collaboration

- Instruct and supervise BSS Hospitality staff and Classroom ES personnel assisting in kitchen operations.
- Work collaboratively with the Hospitality Team, teachers, therapists, and students to develop skill‑building programs aligned with the Hospitality curriculum.
- Attend staff meetings during and outside standard school hours as required.
- Support additional hospitality or special‑event activities outside school hours when needed.

Café & Catering Coordination

- Liaise with the FARM Café Manager regarding development of new menu items and products.
- Plan and coordinate catering orders.
- Provide catering for functions of up to 200 people.

Required Qualifications & Experience

- Experience in the hospitality industry with practical, hands‑on skills.
- Relevant vocational qualifications in hospitality/cookery/baking.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) – essential.

Location Profile

Ballarat Specialist School caters for students aged from 3 to 18 years who have a diagnosed intellectual disability ranging from mild to profound. The school is a dual‑campus K‑12 school organised around four stages of learning – Early Learning (Ages 3‑5), Primary School (Ages 5‑12), Middle School (Ages 12‑15) and Senior School (Ages 15‑18). Our Early Learning to Middle School students are accommodated at our main Gillies Street Campus. Our Senior School students are located at our 8.09 hectare FARM Campus in Norman Street. Our current enrolment is approximately 430 students.

Ballarat Specialist School provides an inclusive and rigorous learning programme that challenges and engages students to grow as passionate learners. The teaching and learning programmes are underpinned by the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework and the Victorian Pathways Certificate. A comprehensive curriculum, with a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy, is embedded into curriculum maps for each of the mini‑schools within the school. Each curriculum map is designed to meet the learning needs of students at their individual stages of learning. This is supported by Individual Education Plans for all students. Communication is a keystone of all learning and curricula within the school. The school's pedagogy reflects current research, and best practice is enacted to maximise student learning outcomes.
