Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer

We are seeking to establish a pool of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEO) for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2026 school year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Byford Secondary College (SC) is a newer school in Perth’s southern suburbs. We have first class facilities to support high quality teaching and learning programs in our college. Located approximately 30 kilometres from the Perth CBD,

our College caters for 1500 students in Years 7 through to 12. We offer a unique setting to many other metropolitan schools, with a blend of urban and rural students; this creates a vibrant mix of students and staff within the college community.

At Byford SC, we work together to provide effective learning experiences where we all grow, and students are prepared for a successful life beyond school. Our college’s moral purpose underpins everything we do, and as such, our teaching and allied professionals report a high level of engagement and satisfaction in working at Byford SC.

Staff are supported both personally and professionally, with a keen focus on work-life balance. Targeted support is available for staff across all career stages, from graduate mentoring, classroom observations, instructional coaching and aspirant leadership development programs. Our school’s planning and improvement is based on the Fogarty Edvance program, which is supported and promoted by all leaders across our college. In 2024 we will also embark on a pilot teacher Intern program,

ITE-EXTEND with Murdoch University that we provide selected teachers with the opportunity to collaborate with the university to engage and support high quality graduates in long term internships at the College.

Our school motto, Aspire to Excellence, clearly articulates our vision of being the secondary school of choice for the local community providing a comprehensive suite of subjects from Years 7 through 12. The College offers an academic extension program for students by selection, in partnership with the University of Western Australia. This ‘Aspire’ program provides these students with access to the university's staff and facilities to enhance their learning experience.

Our commitment is to meet the needs of each student by carefully nurturing their progress through differentiated delivery in every classroom.

Whether a student in our integrated Education Support Facility or an Aspire student, we are committed to ongoing pathway planning and review so that each young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential and achieve their post-school aspirations. Byford SC has an outstanding track record supporting the provision of tailored service for our students with disabilities through our state of the art Integrated Facility.

Byford SC is seeking to establish a pool of highly motivated and organised individuals to the role of AIEO to join their team.

The AIEO assists teachers in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Suitable applicants support students to access their educational program and have an increased understanding of the multicultural nature of the learning environment.

The role of the AIEO will ideally coordinate and lead the Follow the Dream (FTD) Program at the college and support students through their academic journey. They work closely with the FTD coordinator and Associate Principal. At times they may be required to plan incursions, excursions, and communicate honestly and positively with our caregivers.

Suitable applicants act as a liaison between the local community and school to develop educational partnerships with Primary Schools to share cultural experiences and knowledge.

AIEO's work closely with the Student Services team to support students at risk, through mentoring and pastoral care to encourage participation and achievement at school and through engagement with external services and experiences to improve post school outcome.
