Personal & Business Cyber Security Expert (Casual)
Joondalup, Australia | Posted on 10/26/2026
SelfCybr helps everyday Australians, families and small businesses deal with data breaches, scams and online threats. We started because people had nowhere simple to turn for cyber security help. Big-business security was too complex and too expensive, and everyone else was left to fend for themselves. We do things differently: plain language, no shame, Australian data kept in Australia, and real people who help.
We're launching our member app for individuals and families, and growing our managed security service for small and medium businesses. We need someone who can help people on both sides.
This is a casual role initially offering up to 15 hours per week, based in the Joondalup area with some remote work.
Helping individuals and families
- Respond to members who've been caught in a data breach, a scam or an account takeover, and walk them through what to do next in plain English
- Review breach alerts before they go out to members, and check that the risk rating and advice are right
- Help with account recovery, securing accounts, and getting fake or impersonation profiles taken down
- Answer the support queue and return calls, sometimes in the evening during busy periods
Protecting small businesses
- Review security alerts from our clients' systems (laptops, email and Microsoft 365) and decide what needs action
- Help onboard new business clients: setting up protection, checking email security settings, and collecting evidence for certification
- Prepare simple monthly reports a business owner can actually understand
Across both, you'll help write the step-by-step guides we work from, and log your time so we can keep improving how we work.
Requirements
- A cyber security qualification (completed or in your final year), or equivalent hands-on experience
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 security, email security (phishing, and the SPF, DKIM and DMARC email-authentication settings) and how endpoint protection works
- Clear, calm, plain-language communication. You can explain a data breach to a worried parent without jargon and without making them feel foolish
- Good judgement about when to act and when to elevate
- Comfortable keeping careful records and following a set process
- Availability for regular weekly shifts, plus some evening flexibility during our launch period
- The right to work in Australia, and willingness to complete a National Police Check. A Working with Children Check may also be required
Nice to have
- Experience in a help desk, SOC or IT support role
- Experience with Check Point Harmony, Microsoft Defender or similar security tools
- Familiarity with the SMB1001 or Essential Eight frameworks
- Experience with Zoho (Desk, CRM) or similar ticketing systems
- A background in customer service, or in supporting people through stressful situations
- Flexible, rostered hours that work around study or other commitments
- A real hand in building a growing Australian cyber security company from early on
- Mentoring from a founder with incident response experience across major Australian mining and resources clients
- Experience across both consumer and business security, which is a rare combination early in a cyber career
- Training on our tools and processes, plus support toward relevant certifications
- A pathway to a permanent role as the business grows
- A team that values listening, collaboration, explicit communication and curiosity
