Senior Communications Advisor
Location: Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand | Full-time, Permanent
Join Cawthron Institute and help grow the profile and reputation of our science and impact in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world.
We’re looking for an exceptional Senior Communications Advisor who is ready to take on the challenge of growing Cawthron’s profile, influence and impact in Aotearoa New Zealand and on the global stage.
This is an unusually dynamic, senior and hands-on role. You’ll move between the big picture and the fine detail: shaping how Cawthron shares its impact internationally, getting to the heart of complex science and the niche audiences it matters to, and turning that understanding into compelling visual and written storytelling. Working closely with scientists, leaders and the wider Communications team, you’ll lead external communications, media management and integrated campaigns that build reputation, create opportunities and contribute to revenue growth.
What you'll do:
- Develop and deliver external communications strategies and plans that support Cawthron’s priorities, reputation and impact.
- Lead media activity, including managing enquiries, pitching stories, developing media releases and supporting scientists and leaders to engage confidently with media.
- Provide trusted strategic communications advice and turn complex research, issues and opportunities into clear, engaging communications.
- Shape our external channels and create high-quality content that reaches priority audiences and strengthens Cawthron’s brand.
- Use audience and channel insights to improve the reach and impact of our communications.
- Work collaboratively as part of the wider Communications team, sharing ideas and expertise and contributing to joined-up communications.
What you'll bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification and at least five years’ experience in communications or a related role.
- Significant experience in strategic external communications within an organisation,
including developing and delivering communications strategies and providing trusted advice to senior leaders.
- Strong media liaison and management experience, including managing media enquiries and proactively identifying and pitching stories.
- Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with experience creating content across channels and making complex or technical information clear and engaging for non-specialist audiences.
- Strong planning and project management skills, sound judgement and a collaborative, open working style.
Because this is a senior specialist role, proven experience in strategic external communications and media management within an organisation is essential. We’re looking for someone who has worked closely with senior leaders and internal stakeholders, developed and delivered communications strategies, and taken responsibility for an organisation’s external communications and reputation. We know candidates may not meet every desirable requirement. If you have this core experience and believe the rest of your skills could make you a strong fit, we encourage you to apply.
