Spend your summer building robots that go where people can’t. You’ll design parts, assemble prototypes and put hardware to the test, working alongside the engineers building the Ferret. About Puralink There’s an entire world beneath your feet. We’re building the robots to explore it. Pipes carry the water we drink, keep cities running and support everything from energy production to data centres. They’re essential, often difficult to access, and surprisingly poorly understood. We’re changing that. Puralink is building the operating system for the world’s pipes. Our autonomous robot, the Ferret, gets inside infrastructure to inspect and map it. Our software platform, PuralinkOS, turns what it finds into intelligence that helps customers understand their assets and make better decisions. For our mechanical engineers, that means fitting a lot of capability into a small robot. Movement, sealing, packaging, durability and ease of assembly all matter when your hardware has to work inside a pipe. At our Mascot HQ, you’ll work alongside mechanical, electrical and software engineers, helping turn ideas into parts, assemblies and working robots. The role This is a summer of CAD, prototypes and time at the workbench. You might design a test fixture in the morning, assemble it in the afternoon and discover something in testing that sends you back for another revision. You’ll help design and improve components, assemble hardware and run experiments to understand how it performs. You’ll see how choices made on a screen affect manufacturing, assembly and the way a robot behaves in the real world. We’ll give you guidance and practical feedback, with opportunities to take ownership of parts and test setups as your skills develop. What you’ll do
• Turn ideas into hardware. Help design components,
assemblies and fixtures in CAD.
• Build and assemble. Get hands-on with prototypes and robot hardware, checking fit, function and ease of assembly.
• Put designs to the test. Help build test rigs and run experiments to evaluate mechanisms, components and assemblies.
• Find out what needs improving. Investigate issues, document results and work with the team on the next revision.
• Help get parts made. Support engineering drawings, component sourcing and preparation for manufacturing.
• Keep the details organised. Maintain clear design notes, bills of materials and assembly documentation.
• Work across the robot. Collaborate with electrical and software engineers to understand how mechanical decisions affect the whole system. What success looks like You’ve helped take a part or fixture from an idea through design, assembly and testing. Your work has answered a helpful engineering question or improved something on the robot. You’ve learned why a part that looks great in CAD can be awkward to assemble, how to design a more useful test and when a simple change can solve a stubborn problem. You can point to something you helped build and explain the decisions behind it. What we’re looking for You’re studying Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field, and you enjoy making physical things work. You’ll bring:
• Basic CAD skills and an understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals
• An interest in mechanisms, materials and manufacturing processes
• A practical mindset and willingness to spend time building and testing
• Care and attention to detail when designing, assembling and recording results
• Initiative to move a task forward and judgement to ask for help when needed
• Curiosity about why something failed and how to make the next version better University projects, robotics clubs, Formula SAE and personal builds all count. We’d love to hear about something you’ve made, including what didn’t work the first time. Nice to have
• Experience with Onshape, SolidWorks or similar CAD tools
• Familiarity with engineering drawings, tolerances and designing parts for manufacture
• Hands-on experience with 3D printing, machining or workshop tools
• Experience assembling or testing mechanisms and electromechanical systems
• Exposure to designing enclosures, seals or compact assemblies You don’t need to tick every box. We’re interested in your foundations, how you approach problems and what you’re keen to learn. Why spend your summer at Puralink? See your designs become real. Follow work beyond the CAD model and learn from the parts you can hold, assemble and test. Learn alongside experienced engineers. Get practical guidance and feedback throughout the design and build process. Work on the whole engineering problem. See how performance, manufacturing, assembly and maintenance influence one another. Own meaningful work. Contribute to real projects, with support as you build confidence and take on more responsibility. Join us at our new HQ. We’re based in Mascot, Sydney, close to Mascot station, with the team and hardware around you.
