About your new role

Smith & Co is recruiting Civil Leading Hands for permanent opportunities with established civil contractors across Brisbane, South East Queensland and Toowoomba.

You’ll lead the daily work of a civil crew, coordinating operators, labourers, plant and subcontractors to keep site activities safe and on track. You’ll report to the site Supervisor and work closely with site management.

Current projects include road construction, subdivisions and drainage, bulk earthworks and landfill. With opportunities across several projects and locations, we can discuss which role best matches your experience and preferred location. Pay and vehicle arrangements vary by client and role; we’ll explain the details before putting you forward.

Key responsibilities

- Lead the crew’s daily site activities
- Allocate tasks to operators, labourers and other crew members
- Coordinate plant, materials and subcontractors
- Plan daily priorities with the site Supervisor
- Track work progress and check it against project requirements
- Raise site issues early with management
- Support the crew on the tools when needed
- Promote safe work practices across the site





Skills & experience we are looking for
Must-haves

- Experience leading a civil crew as a Leading Hand, Senior Labourer or similar
- Civil construction experience in one or more relevant areas, such as roadworks, bulk earthworks, subdivisions or drainage
- Current Construction White Card
- Explicit communication with crew members, supervisors, and subcontractors
- Reliable, safety-focused approach and willingness to stay hands-on

Nice-to-haves

- Relevant RII machinery tickets
- Experience coordinating plant and subcontractors
- Landfill project experience
