The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality, culturally appropriate administrative and legal support to clients and solicitors. You’ll coordinate court-related administration, maintain accurate client and case records, manage communications and reception, and liaise effectively with clients, legal professionals and key stakeholders. Each day, you will:
- Coordinate court-related administration, including preparing client files, maintaining court attendance rosters, and ensuring matters are managed within required timeframes.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client and statistical records in the CMS, including opening, closing, archiving and general data entry.
- Provide administrative,
secretarial and document preparation support to Criminal Law Solicitors using Microsoft Office systems.
- Manage reception, telephone communications, correspondence and office equipment while maintaining a professional and well-presented office environment.
- Liaise effectively with clients, legal professionals, Court Staff, Police, Corrective Services and other stakeholders, including assisting clients with non-court matters and referrals.
- Promote culturally appropriate, ethical and collaborative service delivery by respecting Aboriginal cultural practices, complying with ALS policies and legislation, and contributing positively to the wider team.

- Be a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, recognised by your community.
- Demonstrated understanding of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people, with a strong commitment to culturally appropriate practices and social justice.
- Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel,
Access and Outlook, with accurate typing skills of at least 35 wpm.
- Excellent communication and telephone skills, including experience operating a small to medium switchboard.
- Solid organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise, multitask and work independently with limited supervision.
- High level of confidentiality, sound problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
