Forensicare:

Forensicare (Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health) is Victoria’s specialist provider of forensic mental health services. We deliver recovery-focused programs that support consumers living with reliable mental illness or problematic behaviours who are connected to, or at risk of contact with, the justice system, across a variety of settings including community-based services, inpatient units, and secure environments throughout Victoria.

Nursing Practice Development Unit

Nursing at Forensicare has a strong focus on recovery-oriented health care that meets the needs of individuals with a mental health diagnosis and who have a history of criminal offending or who may be at risk of offending behaviours.

The National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2010) coupled with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) Standards of Practice, provide a framework for nurses to practice within. Practice is also guided by the Forensic Mental Health Nursing Standards of Practice (2012) The standards provide a benchmark for nurses in daily practice. In addition, they identify the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by nurses and reflect the complex nature of nursing activities.

The Nursing Practice Development Unit (NPDU) endeavours to promote best possible contemporary quality nursing care of consumers requiring specialist forensic mental health care. The NPDU supports a culture of high-quality nursing practice and development, uses evidence-based approaches to care, promotes evaluation and research, as well as supports the development of clinical governance and accountability of nurses.





The NPDU has responsibility for the coordination, evaluation and ongoing development of the nursing graduate program, the provision of quality undergraduate nursing placements and other nursing programs including the Forensic Education for Registered Nurses training program.

Position objective The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) provides sound leadership in nursing staff development, education and practice development. The CNEs coordinate undergraduate and graduate nursing programs across the service and undertake projects related to clinical nursing.

Key responsibilities

- Membership and participation on nursing educational and advisory committees

- Identification of suitable education programs for nurses in consultation with the Director of Nursing Practice, the Senior Mental Health Nurse, Nurse Unit Managers

- Development and coordination of education and training programs for nurses

- Provision of career advice for nursing staff and acting as a resource regarding education and training opportunities

- Contribution to induction and orientation of nurses

- Coordination of training for preceptors

- Initiation, leadership and/or contribution to practice development projects.

Key selection criteria

- A current practising certificate in Nursing, issued by AHPRA Nurses Board of Victoria, with a post graduate qualification in Psychiatric Nursing or equivalent.

- Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.





- Knowledge of legislation and systems pertinent to forensic mental health.
