The Computational Hydrologist will apply advanced mathematical, statistical and computational methods to real world water management challenges.
Working within the Hydrology Team, the Computational Hydrologist supports hydrological modelling, eWater’s products (Source, MUSIC and others) and project delivery in Australia and internationally.
The position has four primary roles:
1. Develop, apply and evaluate hydrological and water systems models and associated computational workflows.
2. Contribute to product development by translating scientific, modelling and user requirements into clear specifications, algorithms, test cases and validation frameworks.
3. Support Source, MUSIC and other eWater tools through testing, documentation, training and user support.
4. Support delivery of eWater projects, reports and stakeholder activities
Core responsibilities
- Build, run and review hydrological and water system models for projects and product testing.
- Apply sound hydrological judgement when developing, reviewing and interpreting models and results.
- Undertake rainfall-runoff, routing, storage, demand, river operation and scenario analysis as required.
- Support Source, MUSIC and other eWater modelling tools through functionality reviews including functional testing, regression testing, issue investigation and documentation.
- Prepare clear technical notes, model documentation, reports, figures, tables and maps.
- Assist in translating hydrological and modelling needs into user requirements, test cases and technical specifications for software improvements.
- Provide technical support and contribute to Source/MUSIC and other eWater training.
- Use GIS and data analysis tools to prepare and analyse hydrological information.
- Contribute to project delivery, proposals, stakeholder discussions and knowledge sharing activities.
- Develop technical capability in Source/MUSIC, hydrology, programming and related areas through practical work and mentoring.
Project Management
- Support project management and delivery through planning, progress reporting, documentation and other project activities as required.
- Follow the requirements of eWater’s Quality Management System and other project management requirements, such as status reports.
Customer Support
- Provide timely and professional technical support to users and clients.
- Build constructive working relationships with government agencies, users, partners and other stakeholders.

Financial
- Maintain timesheet and use eWater’s financial and project management systems as required.
- Support project budget tracking and forecasting as required..
Corporate Services
- Use eWater corporate systems and complete required reporting and record keeping.
- Assist the Corporate Services team as needed, for example in audit procedures and in activity reconciliations.
- Assist with materials for corporate reporting and internal/external communications.
General
- Implement and apply eWater policies, processes, values and professional standards.

Qualifications
- Degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Science, Data Science, Hydrology, civil/environmental/software engineering, environmental science or a closely related discipline.
Knowledge
- Mathematical modelling and numerical analysis principles.
- Statistical analysis, uncertainty assessment and model evaluation methodologies.
- Scientific computing and computational modelling techniques.
- Software testing,
validation and quality assurance approaches.
- Understanding of hydrological and water system modelling concepts will be highly regarded.
Experience
- Experience using computer models and data to analyse real world water problems.
- Experience using numerical models, simulation tools or analytical software.
- Experience in interpreting modelling results and communicating technical findings clearly.
- Experience working with programming languages and analytical workflows.
- Experience in preparing technical reports, analysis or model documentation.
- Experience with eWater Source, MUSIC or a comparable modelling platform will be highly regarded.
Skills
- Strong mathematical, statistical and analytical capability.
- Numerical modelling and computational problem solving skills.
- Scientific programming experience using Python, R, Julia, MATLAB, C#, or similar languages.
- Ability to understand, evaluate and apply mathematical formulations and algorithms.
- Sensitivity analysis, calibration, optimisation and uncertainty assessment.
- Hydrological and/or water system modelling.
- Clear technical writing and verbal communication.
- GIS skills will be highly regarded.
- Ability to learn recent modelling software and test functionality systematically, including understanding of underlying model formulations to investigate unexpected results..
