Curtin University is seeking experienced and compassionate Counsellors to join our Psychological and Counselling Services team and support the wellbeing, engagement and success of our diverse student community.
We currently have two opportunities available, with 1.0 FTE available for each position:
- Fixed-term parental leave cover for approximately six months, commencing in October 2026.
- Continuing position, commencing in December 2026.
While our preference is to fill each vacancy at 1.0 FTE, we recognise that flexibility matters and applications from candidates seeking part-time or job-share arrangements are also welcomed. Suitable arrangements will be considered based on operational requirements and the combination of successful applicants. We also anticipate that further Counsellor opportunities may become available in the near future. As part of this recruitment process, suitable candidates who are not appointed to one of the current vacancies may be placed in a recruitment talent pool and considered for similar future opportunities.
About the Role
As a Counsellor within Curtin’s Psychological and Counselling Services team, you will provide high-quality psychological assessment, counselling and therapeutic support to students across a broad range of presenting concerns.
You will join a large and highly supportive team of psychologists who work closely together, providing an opportunity for collaboration, shared expertise and collegial support that may not always be available in smaller services or agencies.
Working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary environment, you will provide responsive, evidence-based and student-centred support, helping students to manage psychological, emotional and psychosocial challenges and remain engaged with their studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide psychological assessment and evaluate the psychological, emotional and behavioural needs of students.
- Develop appropriate treatment interventions and care plans using evidence-based approaches.
- Deliver short-term individual counselling and therapeutic interventions.
- Undertake intake, biopsychosocial and risk assessments, triage, safety planning and case management.
- Provide face-to-face and telehealth services.
- Deliver individual, group and, where appropriate, couples therapy.
- Liaise and consult with University staff, health professionals and external services.
- Facilitate referrals to external agencies and services where appropriate.
- Develop and deliver preventative psychoeducational workshops, webinars and programs for students and staff.
- Contribute to service planning, continuous improvement and the ongoing development of psychological and counselling services at Curtin.
SELECTION CRITERIA To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A relevant postgraduate qualification and eligibility for registration as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist in Australia, consistent with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in short-term intervention approaches for clients with high support needs.
- Strong assessment, counselling and therapeutic intervention skills.
- Demonstrated ability to support clients from culturally diverse backgrounds.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and liaise effectively with a range of professionals.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
- A strong commitment to inclusive, evidence-based and client-focused practice.
Experience in tertiary education, telehealth services and the development or delivery of group programs would be highly regarded.

3. This role requires that the successful candidate undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check.
4. This role also requires General Registration with AHPRA without conditions.

These positions attract a salary package of $122,699 - $130,758 (G08) per annum, pro rata for part-time arrangements, plus 17% superannuation.
