Director, Enterprise Planning Office The University of Melbourne The University of Melbourne is seeking an accomplished senior leader to lead its Enterprise Planning Office, helping shape how strategic priorities are translated into annual plans, investment decisions, and successful outcomes across the University.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director, Enterprise Planning Office will provide leadership across planning, investment prioritisation, and enterprise portfolio management, ensuring strategy, resources and delivery capability remain aligned.

This is a highly visible leadership role with broad influence across the institution. Collaborating closely with senior executives, Deans and governance bodies, the Director will help create a clear line of sight between the University's strategic ambitions, investment choices, and delivery outcomes.

The Opportunity The Director leads the processes through which the University determines its priorities, assesses investment opportunities, and monitors the progress of major initiatives. The role provides the frameworks, insights and independent reviews that enable senior leaders and governance bodies to make informed, institution-wide decisions.

The Director will oversee the development of an integrated University-wide planning framework that connects strategy, business planning, capital investment, strategic allocations, and portfolio performance. By providing clear analysis, transparent reporting and practical advice to our senior leadership team, the Enterprise Planning Office will enable better decision-making across the institution.

Scope and Role Clarity

Join the University as a trusted adviser to seniors, facilitating executive decision‑making through planning,

portfolio oversight and evidence‑based insights. You will lead a small, agile Centre of Excellence that provides high‑calibre, strategic guidance to those accountable for delivering major University programmes and projects — including business transformation, IT and digital, commercial activities and property.

This is a senior, influence‑focused leadership role: you will be a key advisor to the University’s senior leadership who shape strategy and priorities rather than managing day‑to‑day delivery or carrying out administrative tasks.

What you will do

- Provide explicit, evidence‑based advice that enables confident, timely decisions by senior leaders.
- Establish and maintain robust portfolio oversight to align resources, risk and outcomes across major programmes and projects.
- Act as a key partner to Executive teams, synthesising complex information into practical options and recommendations.
- Lead and develop a high‑performing centre of excellence that delivers evidence-based insights and stewards decision-making for the University’s senior leadership team.

Why this role matters

- Operate at the interface of strategy, finance, risk and delivery with influence at an executive level.
- A unique opportunity for a strategic thinker and leader to partner with senior decision‑makers, offering independent, evidence‑based counsel that shapes priorities,

balances trade‑offs and accelerates outcomes — without line responsibility for operational delivery.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the University's integrated planning cycle, bringing together strategic, operational, improvement and change activities into a coherent enterprise-wide plan.
- Oversee the development of consolidated planning and investment recommendations that support executive and governance decision-making.
- Lead enterprise portfolio management and investment governance processes to strengthen prioritisation, transparency, and benefits realisation.
- Provide independent oversight and assurance across major programs and projects.
- Facilitate strategic planning and performance discussions with senior leaders across faculties and portfolios.
- Deliver clear, forward-looking reporting on enterprise priorities, delivery performance, risk, dependencies, and organisational capacity.
- Build planning capability and promote practical, proportionate governance frameworks that support effective delivery across a complex organisation.

This is a compelling opportunity for an accomplished enterprise leader to partner with the University’s senior leaders to shape institution-wide priorities, influence significant investment decisions and strengthen the University’s capacity to deliver on its strategic ambition. You will bring deep expertise in planning, portfolio management, transformation or investment governance, combined with the judgement, credibility, and commercial acumen to lead effectively across a complex, purpose-led institution.
