Flying Bark Productions are looking for an Environment & Paint Artists to work in our Sydney studio.
The Environment and Paint Artist is responsible for the creative and technical execution of both layout and paint for background environments across the project. Under the direction of the client, and in collaboration with the Background lead, VFX & CG Supervisor, this role plays a critical part in defining and maintaining the look and usability of all background elements.
This role supports the end-to-end pipeline of background layout and paint, ensuring consistent visual style, technical quality, and delivery aligned with schedule and budget requirements. The position also contributes to the integration of 2D assets into a hybrid CG workflow and ensures smooth collaboration between creative and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
- To create production layouts and digitally colour painted backgrounds that work seamlessly with the animation for the Program/s to the creative standards of the project as advised by the Background Supervisor;
- Utilise CG techniques, including 3D modelling and surfacing, in conjunction with digital painting to achieve the desired visual aesthetic and overall look of the project;
- Meet the standard Environment and Paint quota per shot each week as briefed by the Production Crew;
- Ensure all backgrounds closely represent and are true to the style of the key environment designs provided;
- Completion of creative and technical revisions as requested by the VFX Supervisor and/or Background Supervisor in addition to the background quota;
- Adhere to the work flow structure of the project as requested by the VFX Supervisor, including a clean and orderly delivery of assets and layers to the animation and compositing teams;
- Ensuring that anything published for Background Paint and Layout can be used seamlessly by the Animation or Compositing Departments, accounting for variations in lighting, parallax and character interaction with Background Elements;
- Work cohesively within a team environment, and ensuring high levels of communication at all times;
- Adhere to the administrative tools used for tracking workflow, input and delivery/output of shots;
- Robust communication and ability to work to a verbal or visual brief, flagging in advance any issues that may impact on successful timely delivery of material or shots to Production and the Supervising crew.
Skillset:
- A minimum of 5 years industry experience in animated series and/or features
- Solid experience in painting backgrounds or Matte painting;
- Solid knowledge of animation workflows;
- Excellent Photoshop skills and proficiency in other painting software like Substance Painter, Substance Designer;
- In-depth knowledge of Maya and or Blender;
- Knowledge Nuke is highly desirable;
- Excellent communication skills and willingness to share information in a team environment.
Pay: $95,000.00 – $101,400.00 per year
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Alexandria NSW 2015
