Bankstown

About

APS Industries is a growing specialist mechanical solutions business based in Bankstown, NSW, delivering turnkey solutions to clients across diverse industries including manufacturing, industrial, mining, defence, rail, commercial, education and food.

Our core services include the design, supply, installation, project management and maintenance of Compressed Air, Oil/Lubrication Systems, Welding and Vehicle Exhaust Systems.

As APS continues to grow in size, project complexity and financial exposure, we are seeking an accomplished and commercially astute Financial Controller (FC) to join our leadership team and play a pivotal role in the next stage of the business.

This is a leadership opportunity for a finance executive who can combine strong technical capability with commercial judgement, strategic thinking and the confidence to challenge assumptions. The successful candidate will strengthen APS’ financial governance, improve visibility over performance and help Management make better decisions around profitability, cash generation, project performance, risk and sustainable growth.

The Role

We are seeking a high-calibre Financial Controller to take ownership of APS’ financial leadership, governance and commercial finance capability. Reporting directly to the General Manager / Director, you will act as a strategic financial partner to Management and ensure the business has an accurate, timely and forward-looking view of its financial position.

This is not a purely strategic-focused FC role. You will be expected to understand the detail behind the numbers, identify the operational and commercial drivers affecting performance, challenge assumptions and translate financial information into clear recommendations and action. Your remit will span management reporting, cash flow and working capital, budgeting and forecasting, project financial performance and WIP, financial controls, compliance, systems and finance capability.

Key Responsibilities

- Act as a strategic financial partner to Management, providing forward-looking commercial insight, challenging assumptions and supporting major business, investment, resourcing and growth decisions with sound financial analysis and scenario modelling.

- Own the integrity, accuracy, consistency and timeliness of APS’ financial and management information, including month-end reporting, P&L;, Balance Sheet, cash flow, reconciliations and transparent variance commentary that explains what happened,

why it happened and what action is required.

- Lead cash flow and working capital management, maintaining reliable rolling forecasts and actively monitoring receivables, payables, payment cycles, tax obligations, banking arrangements and major project cash movements so risks are identified early rather than reactively.

- Lead budgeting, rolling forecasting and scenario planning using realistic, driver-based assumptions, with clear visibility over pipeline, committed work, cost base, headcount and other material financial drivers affecting business performance.

- Provide strong financial oversight across active projects, including WIP, revenue recognition, project budgets, cost-to-complete, committed costs, variations, claims, margin movement, billing and cash collection, partnering with Project and Operations leaders to address risks before they materially affect margin or cash.

- Build a disciplined and scalable finance function by strengthening controls, approval authorities, systems, processes, accountability and documented procedures. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end finance function first, then identify suitable activities for delegation; by approximately Month 3, plan the structure and responsibilities of a Philippines-based finance team, with the objective of establishing and developing the team by Month 4 under clear FC oversight.

Skills & Experience

- Relevant tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline.

- Strong experience within a project-based environment such as construction, engineering, mechanical services, industrial services or a comparable sector is highly desirable.

- Strong project finance capability, including WIP, cost-to-complete, revenue recognition, margin analysis, committed costs, variations and project cash exposure.

- CA, CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification is strongly preferred.

- Significant senior finance leadership experience, ideally as a FC, Financial Controller, Head of Finance or equivalent senior commercial finance leader with demonstrated readiness to operate at FC level.

- Demonstrated expertise in management accounting, financial reporting, cash flow, working capital, budgeting, forecasting and scenario modelling.

- Strong understanding of financial controls, governance, statutory obligations, reconciliations, approval frameworks and risk management.

- Proven ability to improve and scale finance systems, processes and operating models rather than simply maintain existing practices.

- Experience building, restructuring, leading or developing finance teams. Experience with offshore or international finance support models will be highly regarded.

- Commercially astute, analytical and detail-focused, with the confidence to challenge assumptions and translate complex financial information into clear commercial recommendations.

- Strong executive communication, leadership and coaching capability, high integrity and sound judgement, with the ability to establish accountability across local, offshore and external finance support.

Why Join APS Industries?

- Take a key leadership position with direct influence over the financial and commercial direction of a growing Australian business.

- Work closely with the General Manager / Director and contribute directly to strategic planning, investment, resourcing and growth decisions.

- Opportunity to shape and build the finance function rather than inherit a fixed corporate structure, including development of a scalable international finance capability.

- Gain exposure to complex project financial performance across a diverse range of industries and projects throughout Australia.

- Bankstown location with free onsite parking and an opportunity to make a measurable impact on the next stage of APS’ growth.

Reporting To: General Manager / Director.

Salary: Competitive executive remuneration package, commensurate with the experience and capability of the successful candidate.
