Garment Technician / Pattern Maker – Fashion Manufacturing An independent Australian fashion startup is preparing to establish a small-scale garment development and manufacturing studio in Mackay, Queensland.
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Garment Technician / Pattern Maker to join the business during its establishment phase.
This is not a production-line sewing position. We are looking for someone capable of working across the garment-development process, taking a design, technical information and/or existing pattern through pattern development and refinement, cutting, sample construction, fitting adjustments and small-batch production.
The role will initially involve:
- Developing, completing and refining garment patterns from designs, measurements, blocks and technical specifications
- Preparing production-ready patterns including seam allowances, notches, lining and construction components
- Accurately laying and cutting fabrics
- Constructing complete garments from start to finish
- Producing development and fit samples
- Identifying fit and construction issues and making pattern corrections
- Working collaboratively with the designer through development and fit approval
- Operating industrial straight-stitch, overlocker and coverstitch machinery
- Working with stretch fabrics, linings and elastics
- Developing reliable construction methods for repeat production
- Producing small batches of finished garments to an agreed quality standard
About you We're particularly interested in someone with strong practical garment-construction skills who can work independently across pattern, cut and sew.
Your experience may come from fashion manufacturing, pattern making, sample machining, alterations, bridal, costume, workwear or another professional garment-making environment.
Formal qualifications are welcomed but are not essential where equivalent practical experience can be demonstrated.
Experience with stretch garments and swimwear construction would be highly regarded. Applicants with strong pattern-making and garment-construction experience who are interested in developing these specialist skills are also encouraged to apply.
Employment
- Permanent part-time
- Approximately 18–22 hours per week initially
- Mackay, Queensland
- $30–$35 per hour + superannuation, with the final rate determined according to skills, experience and applicable award classification
- Part-time working days/hours can be structured by mutual agreement
- Employee discount once applicable
- Professional development opportunities
Opportunity to grow This is an early-stage manufacturing role with genuine scope to develop as production grows.
Initially, the priority is straightforward: pattern development, cutting,
sample construction and producing high-quality garments.
Over time, there may be opportunities for increased hours and progression into senior technical and production responsibilities, including quality control, production planning, textile and trim sourcing, supplier and textile-mill liaison, materials and stock management, and supporting future production staff.
These future responsibilities are not requirements of the initial position. We are looking first for an excellent garment technician and are interested in where that person's strengths and ambitions could take them as the operation grows.
Confidentiality
Our startup is currently in a pre-production development phase. Further information regarding the brand, products and upcoming collections will be provided to shortlisted candidates during the recruitment process.
Successful applicants will be expected to maintain confidentiality regarding unreleased designs, patterns, samples, production methods and commercial information.
To apply
Please submit your resume outlining your experience in pattern making, garment construction and qualified sewing.
Examples or a portfolio of garments you have personally patterned, cut or constructed are highly encouraged.
Shortlisted candidates may be invited to participate in a practical skills assessment.
Pay: $30.00 – $35.00 per hour
