West African Resources is seeking an experienced underground mining executive to fill the position of General Manager Underground Mining.
The Company
West African Resources Limited (WAF, the Company) is an ASX listed gold company (trading symbol: WAF).
WAF is committed to delivering shareholder value through current open pit and underground mining operations at the Sanbrado, Kiaka and Toega Gold Projects, in addition to a well-planned strategy of growth through targeted exploration and development opportunities. Current undergrowth growth activities include drilling to extend M1 South and development of M5 South.
The 2026 production guidance for the WAF Group is 430,000 – 490,000oz, and is anticipated to average 533,000oz pa until 2035.
Sanbrado Gold Project The Sanbrado Gold Project (Sanbrado) is located approximately 90km east-southeast of the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou. Sanbrado comprises both underground and open pit mining operations, with the underground mine accessed via a box-cut and portal positioned immediately southwest of the M1 South open pit.
All mines are in close proximity of the processing plant, which features a conventional SABC milling circuit, gravity separation, and carbon-in-leach processing, with a nominal throughput capacity of 2.5Mtpa.
Sanbrado is on track to meet the 2026 production forecast of 190,000 – 210,000oz of gold.
Kiaka Gold Project The Company acquired the Kiaka Gold Project (Kiaka) in 2021 which is located 45km south of Sanbrado, and approximately 110km southeast of Ouagadougou. Kiaka hosts a Mineral Resource of 391Mt at 0.7 g/t for 9.2Moz of gold and an Ore Reserve of 177 Mt at 0.8 g/t for 4.7Moz of gold.
On 26 June 2025, Kiaka achieved a significant milestone with the successful first gold pour, which was delivered three and a half years after the acquisition.
Toega Gold Project
Construction and development of the Toega Gold Project (Toega) is nearing completion.
Toega is an open pit gold deposit located approximately 13km southwest of Sanbrado and will operate as a satellite mining project, providing seven years of ore feed to the Sanbrado processing plant.
The Role
Reporting directly to the COO, the General Manager Underground Mining will provide strategic and operational leadership for current underground operations, as well as future development and expansion projects.
Management of underground mining that includes both operational and technical oversight, alongside senior leadership experience managing contract and owner-mining operations is essential.
International or offshore mining experience will be highly regarded.
This position is based in Perth and requires periodic travel, as well as the flexibility to work across multiple time zones and outside of standard business hours
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee underground mining operations to deliver safe and efficient outcomes which are aligned with targets.
- Foster a positive and productive relationship with the underground mining contractor to ensure that contractual outcomes and operational objectives are achieved.
- Manage underground growth and infrastructure projects (development and expansion) through all stages (feasibility, commissioning and steady state).
- Manage underground CAPEX and OPEX budgets, driving continuous cost-optimisation strategies and maximizing asset lifecycle value.
- Manage regulatory compliance, application and licensing of the current underground operations and development / expansion projects.
- Mentor the underground leadership team, fostering a culture of accountability, operational excellence,
safety and succession planning.
- Highly developed communication skills with a proven ability to engage effectively from executive to the field.
- Experience and confidence to contribute to executive leadership discussions, business planning and organisational strategy.
Qualifications and experience:
- Tertiary qualifications Engineering (Mining) and WA First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (or equivalent) supported by extensive underground mining experience.
- An employment history and leadership experience which encompasses operational, technical and strategic roles.
- Extensive senior leadership experience within underground mining operations, ideally across multiple sites or project areas with exposure to both contract mining and owner-operator environment.
- Experience in both steady state operations and underground projects, including expansion projects to support long-term planning, resource optimisation and strategic growth initiatives.
- Previous international / offshore underground mining operational experience.
- A proven track record of delivering robust operational outcomes while maintaining high standards of safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
- Feasibility and study experience.
- Proven contractor management, including contractual performance monitoring and compliance capability.
- Demonstrated ability to work in dynamic and challenging environments.
