About Us
Sunset Sleepers manufactures reinforced precast concrete sleepers for residential, commercial and civil construction applications. Our manufacturing operations involve mould preparation, reinforcement placement, concrete pouring, curing, demoulding, product handling, quality inspection and dispatch.
We are seeking an Industrial Process Engineer to improve production capacity, manufacturing efficiency and the utilisation of personnel, facilities, equipment and materials.
About the Role The Industrial Process Engineer will evaluate work methods, labour allocation, factory layouts, material flows, production schedules and manufacturing costs. You will establish work measurement programs, identify production bottlenecks and develop practical improvements to workstation arrangements, production sequences and resource utilisation.
Working closely with production personnel, management and the Engineering Technologist, you will implement improvements and assess their effects on throughput, productivity, quality, safety and cost. Key Responsibilities
- Analyse manufacturing processes, production schedules, workforce utilisation and operating costs to identify inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
- Conduct process mapping, time and motion studies, work sampling and capacity analysis to establish standard production times and labour utilisation benchmarks.
- Develop and optimise workstation layouts, production sequences and material flows across concrete sleeper manufacturing operations.
- Assess product mix, mould availability, curing-cycle requirements, labour allocation and equipment capacity to develop production-balancing and capacity plans.
- Review task allocation and responsibilities across production workstations to identify duplicated activities, resource imbalances and avoidable delays.
- Develop standardised work methods and operating procedures that support consistent, safe and efficient production.
- Analyse production volumes, cycle times, labour hours, material consumption, downtime and defect rates to identify trends and assess manufacturing performance.
- Establish and monitor performance indicators for throughput, labour productivity, capacity utilisation, mould turnaround, material yield and production lead times.
- Investigate production bottlenecks, workflow interruptions, inefficient work methods and process-related waste, and implement corrective measures.
- Evaluate proposed products, equipment, tooling and manufacturing methods against production requirements, available capacity, factory layout and expected costs and benefits.
- Collaborate with the Engineering Technologist on improvements requiring equipment or technology changes, defining operational requirements and evaluating their effects on production efficiency.
- Prepare business cases, engineering reports, layout proposals, process specifications and implementation plans for manufacturing improvements.
- Lead improvement projects, coordinate relevant personnel and suppliers, and manage changes while minimising disruption to production.
- Assess safety, ergonomic and quality risks associated with changes to work methods, layouts and material handling.
- Validate revised processes against defined productivity, quality, safety and cost criteria, and verify that expected benefits have been achieved.
- Support Lean Manufacturing initiatives and train production personnel in revised procedures and continuous improvement methods.
About
You
You will have
- A bachelor degree or higher qualification in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Relevant experience in a manufacturing, production or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience analysing work methods, production capacity, labour utilisation, factory layouts and material flows.
- Experience conducting time studies, process mapping, capacity analysis and structured root-cause investigations.
- A sound understanding of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
- Solid analytical skills and the ability to translate operational data into practical engineering recommendations.
- Experience preparing technical documentation, project plans and cost-benefit assessments.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with operators, maintenance personnel, engineers and management.
- A practical approach to implementing improvements in a factory environment.
Experience in precast concrete or construction-material manufacturing, and familiarity with tools such as OEE, FMEA, SPC, 5S, Kaizen and value-stream mapping, will be highly regarded.
What We
Offer
- A full-time engineering position within an established manufacturing business.
- A salary of AUD 80,000 per annum plus superannuation.
- The opportunity to lead practical improvements in manufacturing capacity, productivity and resource efficiency.
- A collaborative working environment with direct involvement in production operations. How to Apply
Please submit your resume and a cover letter outlining your qualifications and relevant manufacturing process improvement experience.
