Refraction Media is seeking an experienced, hands-on Managing Editor to lead editorial planning and delivery across our STEM publishing portfolio.

We publish Careers with STEM, distributed free to every Australian secondary school, alongside the award-winning Careers with STEM: Primary, Science Meets Business and a growing range of career guides, classroom resources and custom publications.

Our work connects science, technology, engineering and maths with people’s interests and ambitions. We also help universities, government agencies and industry organisations tell compelling stories about research, careers and opportunities.

About the role

Reporting to the CEO and Publisher, you’ll lead a small editorial team and work closely with our partnerships team, designers, freelancers and clients.

This is a role for someone who enjoys both shaping publications and doing the work: developing ideas, interviewing people, writing stories, editing copy and keeping projects moving.

You will

- Plan and deliver print and digital editorial across our publications and client projects.
- Write and edit engaging, accurate content for student, educator and professional audiences.
- Lead and support our editorial team and freelance contributors.
- Manage schedules, commissioning, approvals and production deadlines.
- Build strong relationships with clients,



researchers and education partners.
- Maintain editorial quality and consistency across sponsored and independent content.
- Manage social media campaigns using scheduling tools.
- Plan and manage digital campaigns in Google Ads, and track performance using Google Analytics.

About you

You’re an experienced editor or senior journalist with excellent writing skills, sound judgement and a record of delivering publications or content projects.

You can translate complex topics into accessible stories, adapt your voice for different audiences and balance creative ambition with practical deadlines and budgets. You’re comfortable working directly with clients and supporting colleagues in a small, team-oriented team.

You have extensive experience with WordPress, know your way around Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly InDesign and Photoshop, and are confident using Canva, Mailchimp and other digital publishing tools.

Experience in science, education, careers or youth publishing would be highly valued, as would experience delivering commercial or custom publishing projects.
