Roberts Crosbie Mortensen Lawyers

Newcastle

Are you ready to grow your Employment Law career with complex work, commercially engaged clients and the support to build genuine specialist expertise?

Roberts Crosbie Mortensen Lawyers is a growing specialist Business and Litigation firm with offices in Newcastle and Sydney. We work closely with growing SMEs, business owners and directors to solve complex legal problems, manage risk and support the decisions that help their businesses grow.

We are looking for a Lawyer with 3–7 years post-admission experience who wants to focus their practice on Employment Law and build genuine specialist expertise in a dedicated Workplace team. You may be working towards Associate, already at that level, or operating as a Senior Associate. Our Workplace team is growing, and our structure gives us the flexibility to hire the right person. Importantly, if you are a Senior Associate, there is still plenty of scope for your growth, as Workplace is one of our fastest growing teams.

Why this Opportunity Stands Out

You will be part of a team that places a genuine emphasis on communication and collaboration. Regular huddles, 1:1s, matter reviews and daily solicitor and legal assistant catch-ups help our people stay connected and supported.

We have invested in experienced legal assistants, strong systems and dedicated Operations, Workplace Experience, People and Culture, and Sales and Marketing support so our Solicitors can focus on high-value legal work, client relationships and practice growth.

You will have this support while still enjoying the visibility and opportunities for autonomy that come with being a lawyer in a growing specialist firm.

Your Growth Helps Drive Our Firm’s Growth

We believe our firm grows when our lawyers are supported to grow. In this role, you will work closely with a specialist Employment Lawyer with an outstanding market reputation, demonstrated not only by legal outcomes but also by the amount of repeat and referral work he generates.

You will work closely with him on existing employment matters while also taking direct responsibility for your own clients and files.

The role offers strong technical support and clear supervision where needed, with genuine scope to manage matters confidently and independently as your expertise grows.

Complex Work with Commercially Engaged Clients

We work with privately owned SMEs, business owners, directors and commercially engaged clients who value clear, practical and strategic employment advice. We are selective about the matters we take on, so our lawyers can focus on complex, commercially meaningful work with clients who understand the value of specialist legal expertise.

You will advise clients on matters including:

- employment contracts, workplace policies and restraint of trade matters,

- performance management, disciplinary processes and workplace investigations,

- termination of employment, redundancy and unfair dismissal claims,

- general protections, adverse action and discrimination claims,

- employment disputes in the Fair Work Commission and other employment-related forums,

- industrial relations compliance, awards, enterprise agreements and workplace obligations,

- executive employment, senior employee exits and commercially sensitive workplace issues, and

- employment issues arising in business sales, restructures, insolvency and commercial disputes.

Be Rewarded for What You Build

High performance should have meaningful financial upside.

Depending on your level of experience, you may be eligible for our generous individual fee earner commission. Once you meet your agreed fee target, commission is paid monthly in addition to salary, with no cap on what you can earn.

We also recognise contributions beyond individual billing. As our lawyers take on responsibilities such as leadership, graduate mentoring and business development,

performance expectations can be adjusted to reflect that contribution. Our support structure, policies and reward initiatives are designed to make high performance both achievable and sustainable.

We also have distinctive recognition and reward programs that celebrate achievement, reinforce what matters and keep our teams aligned.

What We Offer

- competitive salary plus uncapped monthly individual fee earner commission for eligible lawyers, with clear and transparent career pathways,

- financial support and study leave for Specialist Accreditation,

- annual CPD budget and fortnightly lunch & learns,

- experienced legal support and dedicated corporate services,

- regular feedback and structured communication rhythms,

- versatile working, including the ability to work from home, and

- a People First culture focused on sustainable high performance.

About You

This role is likely to suit you if you:

- have 3–7 years PAE in Employment Law or a strong employment law focus within a broader practice,

- want to focus your career in Employment Law and develop specialist expertise in a growing practice,

- have experience advising on workplace disputes, employment contracts, performance management, termination, unfair dismissal, general protections and employment compliance matters,

- enjoy taking ownership, managing client expectations and driving matters forward from end to end,

- want to build your profile and contribute to the growth of the Workplace Team,

- value strong supervision but do not want to be held back from managing clients and matters independently,

- are interested in Specialist Accreditation in Employment Law,

- and value high standards, specialist expertise and commercially useful advice.

How to apply

If you are a Lawyer with Employment Law experience and are curious about what you could build in a firm that invests in your growth, we would like to hear from you.

Please apply with your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your interest in the role.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and identities.
