Head of Horticulture & Maintenance

Club Malua is seeking an experienced and motivated Head of Horticulture & Maintenance to oversee the care and presentation of our club facilities, gardens, grounds and two natural grass bowling greens.

This is a wide-ranging, hands-on role with a strong focus on horticulture and general maintenance, alongside the preparation and ongoing care of our bowling greens. It would suit someone with practical maintenance skills, experience caring for gardens and outdoor spaces, and pride in keeping a community venue safe, welcoming and well presented.

Located in the coastal community of Malua Bay, Club Malua is home to approximately 130 playing bowls members, with regular social bowls, pennants, championships and tournaments.

About the Role

This is a full-time position of 38 hours per week, with early morning and weekend work required to support bowls events, tournaments and seasonal maintenance.

The successful applicant will plan and carry out day-to-day maintenance across the club, maintain gardens and landscaped areas, and oversee the condition and presentation of the bowling greens.

You will work closely with club management and the Green and Maintenance Manager at Cabra Bowls to coordinate maintenance priorities, seasonal programs and improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities

Bowling Greens

- Prepare, mow, roll and maintain the club’s two natural grass bowling greens.

- Ensure greens are prepared to a high standard for social bowls, pennants, championships and tournaments.

- Develop and implement seasonal turf maintenance and renovation programs in conjunction with the Green and Maintenance Manager at Cabra Bowls.

- Plan, organise and implement chemical spray programs for weed, pest and disease control, including scheduling applications, safely handling and applying chemicals, and maintaining spray records.





- Undertake aerating, top-dressing, fertilising and turf pest and disease management.

- Monitor turf health, irrigation requirements and playing conditions.

Horticulture and Grounds

- Maintain gardens, lawns, landscaped areas, banks and pathways.

- Undertake planting, pruning, mulching, fertilising and weed control.

- Monitor plant health and manage watering and irrigation requirements.

- Identify and manage pests and diseases affecting gardens and turf.

- Maintain tidy, safe and well-presented outdoor spaces throughout the club grounds.

Club Maintenance

- Undertake general maintenance and minor repairs across club facilities, buildings and outdoor areas.

- Conduct routine inspections, identify maintenance needs and address or report issues promptly.

- Plan and prioritise preventative maintenance and day-to-day tasks.

- Assist with improvement projects and coordinate specialist contractors and suppliers when required.

- Operate, care for and carry out routine servicing of tools, machinery and maintenance equipment.

Safety and Coordination

- Maintain appropriate records of maintenance work, materials, chemicals and equipment.

- Ensure the safe use and storage of tools, machinery and chemicals in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements.

- Communicate effectively with club management, staff, contractors and the Bowls Committee regarding maintenance priorities and greens preparation.

About You

We are looking for someone who brings:

- Experience in horticulture, gardening or landscape maintenance.

- Practical experience in general maintenance,



grounds maintenance or a similar hands-on role.

- The ability to undertake minor repairs, identify maintenance issues and recognise when specialist assistance is required.

- Knowledge of plant care, irrigation, fertilising, pruning and pest and weed control.

- Experience in greenkeeping, turf management or maintaining natural sporting surfaces.

- Strong organisational skills and the ability to plan, prioritise and work independently.

- Confidence operating and maintaining relevant tools, machinery and equipment.

- Pride in the upkeep and presentation of club facilities, gardens and grounds.

- Good communication skills and a positive approach to working with staff, members and contractors.

- Availability to work early mornings and weekends.

Experience maintaining natural grass bowling greens will be highly regarded, as will relevant qualifications in horticulture, sports turf management, greenkeeping or a trade.

A current driver licence and relevant chemical-handling qualifications are desirable.
