APO has been contracted by North Queensland Export Terminal Pty Ltd to manage operations of its coal export terminal at the Port of Abbot Point - Australia's northernmost coal port - located 25 kilometres north of Bowen, between Townsville and Mackay, serving as the gateway to the Whitsundays.
Abbot Point Operations has an exciting opportunity for an IT Systems Engineer to join our team and play a pivotal role in our IT Team. Reporting to the Senior IT Systems Engineer, you will help support, secure and continuously improve the technology infrastructure, services and processes that support safe, reliable and efficient terminal operations.
What You'll Do:
Provide practical Level 1-3 technical support and advice to employees and contractors, taking ownership of issues through to resolution and acting as an escalation point when required.
Monitor, support and continuously improve APO's technology infrastructure and services to keep business and terminal operations reliable, secure, resilient and recoverable.
Implement technology changes and releases through documented risk assessment, testing, approval, implementation, rollback planning and post-change validation.
Respond to incidents and problems, coordinating recovery, stakeholder communications, root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Identify and respond to vulnerabilities by patching and securing technology assets using risk-based priorities.
Maintain accurate asset and service inventories, configuration baselines, network and data-flow diagrams, support documentation, runbooks and lifecycle plans.




Deliver assigned technology improvement and innovation initiatives with clear scope, controls, documentation, handover and measurable service, risk and cost outcomes.
Work closely with business stakeholders, managed service providers and technology suppliers to monitor service performance, security expectations, risks, lifecycle obligations and corrective actions.
What We're Looking For:
An Advanced Certificate or Degree in Information Technology or a related discipline; alternatively, at least five years' experience in systems administration and implementing technology in a complex environment.
Experience across Level 1-3 IT support, including helpdesk, desktop, server and infrastructure environments, with the ability to act as an escalation point.
Experience implementing technology changes within established, complex hybrid environments.
Practical experience in service management, incident response, problem management, system recovery and root-cause analysis.
A sound understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals, vulnerability management, patching and risk-based controls.
Strong systems documentation, asset management, configuration management and lifecycle planning skills.
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to explain technology in business terms and build effective working relationships.
Experience working with managed service providers and managing technology suppliers.
Experience in an industrial or operational environment is highly regarded.
