Overview of the Role

Essentially the Class Teacher works from an insight into the whole child and has the utmost care and respect for each one. They model growth and a lifelong love of learning, through one’s own self-development. They have a relationship to the arts that manifests for the children as a deep appreciation of beauty and creativity, and that these will be wellsprings for the children’s whole lives. The Class Teacher serves the “being” of the school and of humanity in their role.

Reporting and Employment Framework

Reports to: The Principal

The Kindy/Primary Class Teacher works within the Steiner pedagogical indications in the contemporary and local context of Kindlehill Steiner School, with the guidelines of the Australian National Steiner Curriculum and addressing the outcomes of NESA.

Employment conditions, including leave, hours of work and other entitlements, are in accordance with the Independent Schools NSW Teachers Cooperative Multi-Enterprise Agreement (CMEA) and the National Employment Standards (NES).

Nature of Appointment and Review

Appointments may be ongoing or for a defined period. In some cases, an initial period of appointment is offered to allow a process of mutual understanding and alignment with the needs of the children, the class, and the school.

During this time, the teacher will participate in regular reflective conversations and review processes with the Principal or a lead teacher nominated by the Principal to support qualified growth and to assess the ongoing suitability of the role for both the teacher and the school.

Professional Responsibilities

Teachers work creatively to plan, implement and monitor a quality educational programme for all the children in the class.

The teacher works collaboratively throughout the school developing and enhancing a coherent curriculum which is delivered creatively and with regard to the particular children in each class.





The class teacher is responsible for all areas of teaching and pastoral care for their specific class, working with teaching specialists, parents/guardians and assistants to provide a rich, coherent, safe and supportive learning environment for the children.

Teaching and Learning – Teachers

Teachers:

- Develop and prepare age-related and imaginative programmes of learning consistent with Steiner’s principles for an understanding of child development and artistic teaching, and with the school’s curriculum and ethos.
- Bring a narrative approach to all subjects and integrate the arts of music, movement and drawing/painting into the daily implementation of lessons.
- Work collaboratively with specialist teachers and assistants.
- Develop and maintain an aesthetic classroom setting.
- Develop and maintain a sensitive and supportive social atmosphere in the class which is inclusive and aligns with school ethos and policies.
- Manage behaviour in positive and supportive ways consistent with the ethos of the school and its policies.

Teachers will document, assess and report on student progress (academic, social, emotional and physical), ensuring that teaching remains responsive and adjustments are made for individual learning needs. Feedback is provided to parents in accordance with school policy, with a strong emphasis on face-to-face communication.

Teachers contribute actively to the life of the school through participation in playground supervision, whole school gatherings, seasonal festivals, performances, and community events, as well as through building relationships with children and families across the school.

Workload and Professional Expectations

The school will communicate to teachers, on appointment and from time to time, the usual expectations of the role, including:

- Approximate face-to-face teaching responsibilities. This role is full time. We aim to provide 2 hours of RFF per week. Other specialist teachers may support the class from time to time.
- Non-contact time and preparation expectations. There are four weeks
- Participation in meetings, including College, staff, and planning preterm meetings. This includes weekly studio meetings.
- Fortnightly College Meeting (if relevant).
- Fortnightly Team meetings.
- Pre and post term college meeting if relevant.




- Whole staff preterm meetings.
- Involvement in co-curricular and community activities, including school events, camps and festivals

Management and Administration – The Class Teacher

The Class Teacher:

- Actively participates in administrative requirements of the role, including contributions as a College member where appropriate.
- Works collaboratively with the Principal and Business Manager within the practical constraints of budgets and resources.
- Uses effective communication and consultative approaches across the school, including:
- Parent evenings and interviews
- Written communications and newsletters
- Collaboration with assistants and specialist teachers
- Supervises and supports the work of class assistants.

Community Participation

The Class Teacher:

- Enhances and strengthens the community life of the school by actively preparing and participating in fairs, open days, whole school events, and working bees.
- Builds and maintains respectful, open and warm relationships with parents and the wider community.

Leadership

With experience, Class Teachers may take on leadership roles, including:

- Leading specific pedagogical or organisational initiatives
- Facilitating College meetings or contributing to governance processes
- Mentoring colleagues and supporting peer development
- Liaising with parents on specific areas of responsibility
- Supporting behaviour guidance and learning support across the school
- Contributing to the long-term development and sustainability of the school

Professional Development and Accreditation

Teachers are expected to:

- Engage in ongoing professional learning and self-development, including participation in artistic and pedagogical work (e.g. Studio group)
- Maintain their NESA accreditation and fulfil associated professional requirements
- Contribute to the professional learning culture of the school

Child Safety and Duty of Care

Safety and wellbeing are priorities in the school.

Teachers are required to:

- Maintain a current Working With Children Check (WWCC)
- Comply with all child protection legislation and mandatory reporting obligations
- Understand and implement school policies and procedures relating to student safety and wellbeing
- Contribute to a secure, supportive and respectful environment for all children.
- Complete annual Child Protection Training and attend refresher courses.

Flexibility of Duties

As part of a living and collaborative school environment, the responsibilities of the role may evolve or adjust in response to the needs of the children, the class, and the school community.
