Most payroll functions grow the way ours did. Quietly, in pieces, around whoever happened to be there, on whatever system was in front of them. That worked while we were small. We are not small any more, and we have stopped pretending the arrangement is fine.

Behind us sits ownership with a long horizon and the money to build properly rather than patch. The plan is to roughly double inside three years, much of it by acquisition. Nobody here treats that as a stretch. A new leadership team has spent the year quietly retiring the old habit of rewarding hours in favour of rewarding results, which some people have enjoyed more than others. We are a smaller place than our ambitions suggest, so nobody sits between you and a decision. Payroll is early in the queue, because it is the one function nobody notices until it is wrong. That is the gap this Senior Payroll Officer role exists to close.

The Role

Reporting to our Financial Controller, the Senior Payroll Officer role is the first time we will have had one person genuinely own payroll from end to end. You would run it, not assist with it.

The first job is to take payroll as it stands and make it dependable. The second is to bring it onto a single platform and decide how it should work from there, with a capable colleague alongside you who knows the history and stays close through the transition. There is finance work attached as well, so this suits someone comfortable outside a pure payroll lane. Duties will include, but not be limited to:

- Running the end to end payroll, start to finish
- Processing new starters, employee changes, terminations,



redundancies and final pays
- Checking timesheet and attendance data, then calculating the overtime, allowances and penalties that fall out of it
- Owning the move onto a single payroll platform, including data, parallel runs and cutover
- Interpreting awards, agreements and contracts, then making the call when the wording is unclear
- Superannuation, PAYG withholding, payroll tax, employee deductions and Single Touch Payroll reporting and reconciliation
- Maintaining employee records and contracts, and keeping leave accruals right across annual, personal, long service and parental leave
- Managing workers compensation claims and the transactions that follow them
- Month end payroll journals, general ledger reconciliations and year end finalisation
- Partnering with HR on system setup and on how process changes land with employees
- Being the first point of contact for employees and managers on anything pay related
- Supporting the wider finance function with reconciliations, reporting and the lift toward external audit

About You

You are the kind of Payroll Officer who reads the award properly before answering, and who would rather raise an awkward question early than find the problem inside a pay run. You are comfortable being the only person who does this job,



and comfortable that it makes you visible when something goes wrong. You have run a system move before, or you have watched one done badly and know exactly what you would do differently. Discretion matters here, because payroll sits close to information people are entitled to keep private, and you treat that as a given rather than a policy.

Skills & Experience

To be effective in the Senior Payroll Officer role, you will likely bring:

- Several years running payroll end to end in a standalone or lead capacity, rather than as one part of a large team
- Confident interpretation of modern awards and employment agreements, and the judgement to know when to seek advice
- Working knowledge of a cloud payroll platform, ideally including a migration from one to another
- Strong reconciliation discipline across superannuation, PAYG, payroll tax and STP
- Comfort moving between payroll and general finance work
- A relevant qualification in accounting, bookkeeping or payroll, or the experience to stand in its place
