Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Vehicle Fitter – Field Service and Workshop

Aries Rail is seeking a qualified Diesel Mechanic or Heavy Vehicle Fitter to join our Melbourne Service team. This is a varied, hands-on role combining workshop and field service duties. You will maintain, diagnose, repair and service heavy vehicles, plant, earthmoving machinery and specialized rail and road-rail equipment. The position will involve travel throughout Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate. Travel will generally be planned in advance and managed through a team roster wherever practicable, allowing employees reasonable visibility of upcoming requirements. There may also be occasions when travel is required at shorter notice to support urgent breakdowns or operational needs. Some after-hours, weekend and on-call support will be required. These requirements will be shared across the team and planned wherever possible.

Key responsibilities

Conduct scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on heavy vehicles, plant, earthmoving machinery and specialized rail equipment.

Perform workshop and field service work across Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate.

Respond to equipment breakdowns, unscheduled repairs and urgent customer requirements.

Participate in after-hours and on-call arrangements when required.

Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and diesel engine faults and complete effective repairs.

Complete accurate service reports, timesheets and maintenance records, including details of work performed, parts used and recommended follow-up work.

Ensure work is completed in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements and applicable safety standards.

Work collaboratively with technicians, supervisors, administration staff, customers and other Aries Rail departments.

Maintain service vehicles, tools and equipment in a safe and professional condition.

Contribute to improvements in service delivery,



equipment reliability and customer outcomes.

About you

A recognized Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic or equivalent trade qualification.

Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing heavy vehicles, mobile plant, earthmoving equipment or similar machinery.

Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and mechanical components.

Strong diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities.

The ability to work independently in workshop and field environments.

Clear verbal and written communication skills.

The ability to complete accurate and detailed service documentation.

A strong commitment to secure work practices, quality and customer service.

A current Rail Industry Worker card, or the willingness and ability to obtain one.

The ability to successfully complete a Category 3 rail medical, including drug and alcohol screening.

Flexibility to undertake planned travel within Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate.

Availability to provide some after-hours, weekend and on-call support when required.

Experience working with rail or road-rail equipment will be highly regarded but is not essential.
