We are hiring an Energy Trading Specialist as our in-house trading expert, responsible for analysing the NEM and shaping the bidding and dispatch strategies applied to client battery and hybrid assets.
Key responsibilities:
- Monitor NEM wholesale energy and FCAS prices, dispatch outcomes, and the supply, demand, network and weather factors that drive them, forming and communicating a view on market conditions and what they mean for bidding behaviour
- Analyse trading and dispatch performance, identify potential issues and missed opportunities, and quantify the drivers using OptiGrid's market data and backtesting tools
- Test, tune and recommend improvements to automated bidding and dispatch strategies, with respect to the risk profile of each client
- Review high price events and volatility episodes and translate the findings into actionable internal and customer-specific insights
- Maintain and apply current working knowledge of the National Electricity Rules as they apply to bidding and rebidding
- Provide human oversight of automated bidding, including manually intervening and rebidding battery assets during high price events, network outages or market disruptions
- Advise customers and prospective customers on NEM market conditions, trading strategy and asset performance
- Guide customers on strategy configuration, risk management and bidding compliance
- Establish and maintain relationships across the NEM trading community, including customers, counterparties and market bodies
Skills and experience required:
- A Bachelor degree in engineering, economics, finance or a related quantitative field, or at least five years of relevant experience in lieu of a formal qualification
- 3+ years of NEM trading experience, covering spot market analysis, bidding and asset optimisation
- Strong understanding of NEM fundamentals: dispatch and pricing mechanics, bidding and rebidding behaviour, FCAS markets, and the drivers of asset revenue
- Positive understanding of price forecasting and battery optimisation mechanics
- A track record of working with large market datasets and turning them into insights that inform trading, operational or commercial decisions
- Working knowledge of bidding compliance obligations under the National Electricity Rules
- A clear communicator who can explain market behaviour to technical people and tooling to non-technical customers
- Self-directed, accountable, and able to deliver without heavy process
Desirable: familiarity with SQL and Python, experience in a client facing analytical or advisory role, and experience manually intervening with autobidding platforms during high price events or market disruptions.
Salary: $150,000 to $170,000 per annum plus superannuation.
