Senior Mechanical Engineer – Studies & Concentrator Design Review

Lithium Mine Expansion Project | Client-Side Role | Perth

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in mineral processing studies and concentrator design to support the design progression of a lithium mine expansion.

Working within the client’s project team, you will review engineering deliverables prepared by the project’s engineering consultant and provide practical, technically robust input from a mechanical maintainability, operability and reliability perspective.

This position would suit an engineer with experience working for a leading mineral-processing engineering with previous EPCM experience, who has contributed to feasibility studies and the development of concentrator projects through successive design phases.

Key Responsibilities

- Review mechanical engineering deliverables as the concentrator design progresses.

- Review and provide feedback on models, plot plans, equipment layouts, drawings, specifications and data sheets.

- Assess the design and selection of:

- Chutes and transfer systems

- Slurry piping and hydraulic systems

- Pumps and pumping systems

- Tanks, vessels and associated mechanical equipment

- Materials-handling and mineral-processing equipment

- Provide client-side input into pre-feasibility, feasibility and detailed design deliverables.

- Assess equipment accessibility, maintainability, operability and safe isolation requirements.

- Identify potential maintenance, operational and constructability issues before they are incorporated into the final design.

- Review equipment arrangements for access, removal routes, lifting requirements and maintenance activities.

- Challenge designs constructively and recommend practical, fit-for-purpose engineering solutions.

- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews and technical workshops.

- Work collaboratively with the client, engineering consultant, vendors and other project stakeholders.

- Help ensure the concentrator design supports safe, reliable and efficient long-term operation.

About You

To be successful, you will ideally have:

- A recognised degree in Mechanical Engineering.

- Extensive mechanical engineering experience within the mining and mineral-processing sector.

- Demonstrated experience completing or reviewing study-phase engineering, including:

- Scoping studies

- Concept studies

- Pre-feasibility studies

- Definitive or bankable feasibility studies

- Front-end engineering design

- Detailed design

- Previous experience with a mineral-processing engineering consultancy or EPCM organisation, such as Lycopodium, Ausenco, GR Engineering, Primero, Worley or a comparable business.

- Strong concentrator or process-plant experience, ideally covering crushing, grinding, classification, flotation, dewatering or materials handling.

- Detailed knowledge of chutes, slurry piping, pumps and associated mechanical equipment.

- Experience developing or reviewing mechanical equipment lists, data sheets, specifications,

calculations and technical bid evaluations.

- The ability to review 3D models and layouts from an operational, maintenance and whole-of-life perspective.

- A strong understanding of plant maintainability, equipment accessibility, lifting and removal requirements, isolation philosophy and operational readiness.

- The ability to identify design weaknesses and develop practical solutions rather than simply documenting issues.

- Solid written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to provide constructive technical challenge.

- Experience working within an owner’s team or providing independent client-side engineering review will be highly regarded.

Highly Regarded Experience

- Lithium or hard-rock mineral-processing projects.

- Brownfield concentrator expansions.

- Client-side design assurance or owner’s engineering.

- Operational readiness and maintenance-build activities.

- Reliability, maintenance or plant-operability reviews.

- Development of projects from feasibility study through detailed design, construction and commissioning.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to play an influential client-side role on a significant lithium mine expansion.

Rather than producing design deliverables directly, your focus will be on independently reviewing the developing design, identifying practical issues and helping ensure that the completed concentrator is safe, operable, accessible and maintainable.

You will work closely with experienced technical and project professionals and have the opportunity to meaningfully influence the design before it progresses into construction and operation.
