About This Exciting Prospect

As AIMS’ Benthic Research Technician, you will play a key role in contributing to the analysis, interpretation, and management of long-term coral reef monitoring data. Working closely with Research Scientists, you will undertake computer-based analysis of field-collected imagery to assess benthic community composition, support ecological analyses investigating patterns of coral community change, resilience, recovery, and connectivity, and contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and peer-reviewed publications.

This role also supports the management and quality assurance of ecological datasets, ensuring data are accurately processed, organised, and archived in accordance with established protocols. In addition, this position provides laboratory support for routine molecular workflows, including sample processing, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, amplicon purification, and library normalisation for sequencing. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to nationally significant tropical marine research while developing expertise in coral ecology, benthic image analysis, ecological data synthesis, and molecular laboratory techniques.

About You

You will hold a master’s degree or higher in Marine Biology, Ecology, or a related discipline, with demonstrated expertise in identifying benthic invertebrates from video and still-image datasets. You have the ability to identify Scleractinia corals to at least genus level, with species-level identification highly regarded.

You will bring practical field experience working on tropical reefs and are confident contributing to collaborative research projects through data analysis, including the preparation of data visualisations, spatial maps, and technical reports. Experience with bioinformatics software and molecular laboratory techniques, including DNA extraction and PCR protocols, will be highly valued.
