Located in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy Railway is Australia's premier preserved steam railway and a Victorian State-owned entity. Operating on the original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook, our century-old railway welcomes visitors from across Australia and the world for authentic, memory-making journeys.

About the Opportunity

Based predominantly at our Belgrave workshop with some requirement to work at other locations across the Puffing Billy rail corridor, we have a full-time position 75hrs per fortnight, for an experienced trade qualified Workshops Leading Hand. The role remains hands-on while coordinating daily workflows, supervising team performance, ensuring compliance with the Railway Safety Management System, and fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

This is a rare opportunity to work with a team of talented trades and craftspeople ensuring the highest standards of maintenance and presentation of locomotive and carriages of an internationally recognised heritage steam rail organisation.

What you'll do

- Repair, maintain and restore heritage locomotives and rolling stock

- Use a variety of machinery, such as lathes, grinders and milling machines

- Interpret technical drawings and use precision measuring tools

- Work with a welcoming team of skilled professional trades and apprentices

What you'll bring

- Formal mechanical trade qualifications





- Trade experience as a fitter machinist in a similar position, particularly in a heavy machinery workshop environment

- Demonstrated experience in team supervision and development

- High level technical aptitude and mechanical skill

- Proven commitment to safety and learning
