About the opportunity

The Technical Officer will work within the School of Natural Sciences, primarily in Biological Sciences to provide technical support to teaching and research activities. The School of Natural Sciences trains the next generation of leaders in science, technology, and mathematics which are the future fundamental subjects of Australia. The Technical Officer will provide technical support to field and laboratory-based practicals for undergraduate students, research projects, day-to-day operations and the activities of research laboratories.

The Technical Officer is responsible for all matters relating to supporting the management and Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) of teaching and research laboratories, including supporting the delivery of inductions, chemical management, facility maintenance and technical support for the School of Natural Sciences, primarily in Biological Sciences. The Technical Officer may be required to provide cross-discipline technical support when required or receive additional support from other technical officers within the School as needed.

The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence in all aspects of supporting teaching and research activities in Biological Sciences and be able to work collaboratively and constructively with academics to achieve the best outcomes for teaching and research.

Key Outcomes:

- Support the organisation and management of day-to-day operations in teaching and research laboratories and provide high level support services.




- Contribute to technical elements of the teaching program including demonstration, preparation, and delivery of teaching resources (e.g. use of instrumentation).
- Coordinate the development, maintenance and revision of laboratory manuals, safe work procedures, generic risk assessments, audits, maintenance records and other documentation for facilities and equipment in accordance with statutory requirements and UTAS policy.
- Conduct inductions on safe lab practices for all lab users maintaining clear records to ensure work is conducted safely and effectively.
- Provide technical analytical support by undertaking the preparation of samples to prescribed standard; collecting, preparing, and analysing plant and animal specimens to support hands-on learning and prepare reports of a technical nature as directed.
- Provide guidance on equipment for students and staff to conduct their work safely and effectively.

Role Specific Skills, Knowledge and Experience

- Demonstrated experience in Safety, Health and Wellbeing processes and safe systems of work management including the management and handling of chemicals and laboratory hazards
- Ability to positively interact with students, staff, senior managers and stakeholders external to the University.
- Demonstrated well-developed written and oral communication skills, with particular emphasis on attention to detail and ability to interact effectively with a wide range of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Skills and experience using a range of computer packages, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and cloud-based systems.

Qualifications and Licences





- A Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Zoology, Plant Science (Botany), Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and laboratory experience.
- Drivers Licence.
- Current first aid certificate or a willingness to undertake first aid and Fire Warden training.
- Current Working with Vulnerable People (employment class) registration.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105,665 (pro-rata) comprising base salary within the range of $80,869 to $90,312 (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.
