The key duties of the position include:
We are seeking Law Interpretation Officers to join our Law Design and Practice and Compliance and Engagement Group business areas.
As a Law Interpretation Officer, you will provide advice and contribute to technical excellence through research, analysis and knowledge sharing to support the delivery of high-quality advice to internal and external stakeholders.
You will interpret and apply taxation legislation, rulings, policy and procedures to resolve routine to moderately complex tax technical issues and where appropriate, facilitate the escalation of novel or precedent setting matters for resolution. You may also research and analyse information, identify risks in the application of the law, contribute to decision-making, and support the ATO's established view of the law.
You will support the development of evidence-based advice, legislative design and policy initiatives, by undertaking research, analysis and information gathering.
By working collaboratively with internal partners and, where required, engaging with Treasury and other government agencies, you will ensure policy intent is translated into practical, effective and administrable law.
You will apply a holistic approach to law interpretation and decision making to maintain the integrity of the tax system and work with various stakeholders to resolve and prevent disputes.
You will have the opportunity to work with experienced and accomplished senior staff to develop your technical expertise through coaching, structured learning and exposure to a range of tax and superannuation issues.

• recognises when there may be risks and uncertainties in the application of legislation or policy,
escalates issues appropriately, and contributes to effective risk mitigation and consistent decision-making.
Qualifications in taxation, business, or law are desirable but not essential.
Eligibility

This recruitment process is being used to fill both ongoing and non-ongoing positions. Non-ongoing positions may be offered for up to 18 months.
Non-ongoing vacancies have the potential to become ongoing. These non-ongoing positions may become ongoing within the next 12 months. Should a position become ongoing then the merit pool established through this selection process may be used to fill the vacancy.
