Boab Metals Limited is progressing the development of the Sorby Hills Project, located 50 km northeast of Kununurra in the East Kimberley. Sorby Hills is Australia's largest undeveloped near-surface lead–silver deposit, supported by granted mining leases, EPA approval, and proximity to established infrastructure, including Wyndham Port only 150 km away. With permitting and infrastructure already in place, Sorby Hills is uniquely positioned for fast-track production. Alongside Sorby Hills, Boab is actively exploring its 100%-owned Manbarrum and Eight Mile Creek prospects, strengthening our growth pipeline across the region.
About the role
As Sorby Hills progresses towards development and operations, we are seeking an experienced Senior Mining Engineer (Alternate Quarry Manager) to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in establishing and optimising an open pit mining operation within one of Australia's most significant undeveloped lead-silver projects. Reporting to the Site Senior Executive, you will lead mine planning and support operational activities, working closely with contractors and technical teams to support project delivery, operational readiness, and the safe transition to mining operations. As the appointed Alternate Quarry Manager, you will play a key role in supporting safe and compliant mining activities while contributing to the successful execution of the mining strategy, working closely with site operations, geology, processing, environment, and project teams to ensure mining activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with business objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Fulfil Quarry Manager statutory responsibilities and ensure compliance with WHS (Mines) legislation and site standards.
- Lead safe, efficient and productive open pit mining operations.
- Manage mining contractor performance across safety,
production, cost and quality metrics.
- Develop and optimise short and medium term mine planning and schedules.
- Support mine development, operational readiness and project execution activities.
- Monitor production performance, mine reconciliation and cost control outcomes.
- Lead risk assessments, incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to operational and technical teams.
- Collaborate with geology, processing, maintenance and project stakeholders to achieve production objectives.
- Contribute to budgeting, forecasting and life-of-mine planning activities.
About you
- Degree qualifications in Mining Engineering.
- WA Quarry Manager's Certificate of Competency.
- First Class Mine Manager's Certificate (highly regarded).
- Minimum 5 years' experience in open pit mining operations.
- Demonstrated experience in mine planning, scheduling, and operational leadership.
- Experience with contractor mining operations.
- Strong working knowledge of Surpac, Minesched, and GoldSim and/or project software such as ArcGIS and AutoCAD is highly beneficial.
- Experience in project development, mine start-ups, commissioning, or operational readiness programs highly desirable.
- Sound understanding of drill and blast practices, production optimisation, and pit management.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Current C Class Driver's Licence.
